Finished two days at WGI with SCDA.
First day I was on Rear Corsa 295/30/19 and Front 265/35/19 RT660. This was the fifth day at WGI with that set. I was fighting traffic for the whole day in both groups - Advanced and Intermediate 2. But I managed 2:11-2:12 on clear laps when I got a chance. My best was 2:11.10 which was not far for my PB of 2:10.80 Second day I mounted a sticker rear 295/30/19 RR and sticker front 255/35/19 Advan 052A. I was expecting some significant grip but I felt very little difference than the previous day. The morning sessions were still in traffic and still hitting 2:11-2:12. The afternoon session started with a promise. I was going on 2:11 pace with predictive of -1.5 sec and a chance to go below 2:10 for the first time. But when I got to the boot flag station the checkered flag was out and the session was over. Damn. Grrrrr The next session was later in the day, on the second day and many drivers called it a day. more open track. I hit 2:08.87 and the session was over. That was my PB by 2sec. I was happy. Very happy. The next and last session I hit 2:08.82, and then 2:08.62 for another PB and two laps on 2:08 pace. It was a good way to finish the day. But wait there is more…… Went to pull the SD card of the SmartyCam and it was not there. I forgot it in the computer. So for both sessions where I did 2:08.x I don't have a video. So disappointing. I do have the data from the EVO5. Next target is breaking the 60sec barrier at LRP… |

2:10 is fast, if you run 2:08s at WGI you will be faster than most cars in the advanced run groups.
Looks like you are improving and now lets all go there in October and see what we can do in a much cooler weather...

Shadow and his brother suggested to go there in October with Hooked on driving. I want to go there with NASA because don't have to pay for the event as an instructor. However, I think going with HOD will give us more open laps with less traffic I think and they will be running their event towards the end of October with cooler temp. probability. Have not decided yet.

In advanced I try to go first the get a clear track and basically the only cars that catch up to me are the full race cars. For example there were two full NASCAR type cars that passed me that were going sub 2min at speeds not on the same league as 3600Lbs car with amateur driver. There was also a Mustang race car that also was going at another planet pace and not waiting for point-by and that's about it. Two or three Corvettes stayed with me for a lap and dropped off, I chased another black Corvette for 3/4 of a lap looking for weakness and the guy gave up and gave me a point by. Most cars I chase run away from me on the straights and I catch them in the turns. So it is a bit tricky to ask for a point by since even if I get a point by, they catch up to me at the 3/4 distance on the straight, but they tend to brake too soon. So it takes few turns to create enough of a distance foe them to give up, or I give them a point by - they pass me - and I am on their tail two corners later. With a good driver this is a lot of fun, with a bad driver - they don't give a point by so the accordion effect last until I get tired of this and pass them at a slow corner and in a few corners it is a non issue. I have to pick a passing situation were they can't say I did a danger pass. So I study their brake pattern and when I know we are coming to a corner that the car in front of me brake much too early and way before the corner I can just clear the situation very safely. In the Intermediate 2 group I enjoy starting in the back and hunt the group the whole session. My goal is to get to the front before the session end. Surprise Surprise the Intermediate 2 group is a lot better with point bys. The advance group also run with the Instructors and you would think a point by is a non issue, but it is actually more problematic. Different groups have different etiquette, at the GVC BMW CCA I got point by but just showing up 100 feet behind someone. This means I don't have to slow down and then speed up. With SCDA I have to get behind some one, so right there it is a through away lap. At NYST, my home track, most people know me not matter the group, so I have less of an issue. At the end of the day, I am not racing and point-by is a necessary safety mechanism and I accept it. Having said that, open track day like David Murray, or GVC BMW open track for an hour is still my favorite format. |

Personal Best at LRP 1:00.62
While not a big improvement from 60.92, this session I was 7 laps in a row on 61sec with 2-4 tenth variations. Also in few other sessions I was able to go below 61 sec at least once per lap. Tires second day after 8 sessions at WGI. Front Yoko 052A 255/35/19 Rear Toyo RR 295/30/19 Wing on 7* (ground as reference) |

Interesting thread I always enjoy reading it. I agree on open track, it's way better. I did one recently with Jeffapalooza at NJMP which was all day, get as much in as you like. Just have to be hyper aware as the race cars (which was probably 75pc of the cars) can be very aggressive, but the lack of point by requirement mean you don't get stuck in a train as you can just sail by. Not having sessions is also great as you have the time to be patient and get a clean lap. I don't know much about David Murray but someone else mentioned it to me recently so I assume it's similar, looking to do WGI in October myself.

These 2 laps on 61.0x seconds were in the prior session to my personal best.
The theoretical lap between this session and the 60.62 lap was 58.62. A full 2sec faster than my best time. So the low hanging fruit goal is clear, I don't have to go faster then I already go, I have to put it all together better. |

2 seconds faster than your actual best seems a bit suspicious. You sure you had all non real laps disabled in aim?

Very satisfying day at NYST.
Rear 295/30/19 Toyo RR 4th day used heavily at WGI and LRP Front heavily used Advan 255/35/19 A052 The last session on the A052 Lap Time: 1:37.00 And they were done. Pic attached. Mounted the 265/35/19 RT660 Heavily used at WGI Lap Time: 1:36.04. Number of laps on 1:36 = 5 Number of laps on 1:37 = 11 Number of laps on 1:38 = 9 I am only mentioning this because it is the first time for me to go 25 laps at 1:38 or faster pace in one day |

It happens to most cars at NYST. Once I started to visit LRP, PMP and WGI, I was shocked to see how long tires last. Conversely, when I visited LRP for the first time after 60 track days at NYST I thought I was driving on ice. |

Well if this sport was cheap i guess everyone would do it right! I love following your threads and in depth tire analysis. i often refer back to it when i am searching for tires myself.

It is October Tomorrow and I finally pull the trigger on Ultra High Performance All season.
There are two reasons to go with a set of UHP All seasons - rain and temperature. Here in the north east we can have track days in very cold temperatures i March and November. while I am not interested in the snow capability of UHP All season, I am interested in their rubber compound for cold weather. Second, I wanted a set for rain days. I know that MP4S are good in the rain. Let me tell you, I drove 2 hours in the heavy rain on these MP4S and hydroplaned in 30mph. So I want to go faster in the rain, not just going while it is raining. For the rear I went with: 305/30R-19 COOPER ZEON RS3-G1 XL Basically because it is only one I can find in 305. The front I went with: 285/30ZR-19 CONTINENTAL EXTREME CONTACT DWS 06 PLUS XL I am aware that I could have the DWS in 265 front and 275 rear. Supposedly a narrow tire would be good in the rain. But, I did two open track days at WGI with torrential rains on the first day. All the professional teams on rain tires had the same size tires. They did not have narrow tires for the rain. I will let you know how this set work if the conditions call for it. For the rest of the season I already have variety of summer tires to finish off 2021. |
