I never did this before, but this time around I'd like to take a victory lap for the iX. It's been the toughest one in more than seven years of my "hobby" to gather good information about, and I'm happy I didn't let you all down.

On a more general note, looking at all the information available to me I can't shake the feeling that we're at the end of active development of internal combustion engines, at least for mass market vehicles. There will of course be some advances and improvements but even the future generations of BMW vehicles (right now I'm looking specifically at the new transverse platform, the Minis and the 1-series) are going to use the same well known engines we see in various models today.

So what you're saying is there is no evidence of e.g. a B48 successor? I would have expected some noise about this already and I was wanting to ask about it sooner but now I've got my answer

My understanding is that this is the evolved CLAR matrix we’ve been hearing about in the media for some time now. It will underpin essentially every new BMW from the 3 Series and above starting with the iX, followed by the G70 7 Series, G60 5 Series, and the rest of the upcoming generation. Every product family will be available with electric drive options.

BMW officials have said in the recent past that the current engine lineup is the very last. There will be continued electrification in the form of both mild hybrid and PHEV setups. But don’t expect any wholly new engines.

In fact, some engines may soon be phased out. For example, there are signs that the N63 won’t be around long enough to be hybridized. Instead, the upcoming electrified S63 (which will get a name change to S68) could be the only V8 for the next generation, while everything below might be a B58 (or perhaps S58) hybrid. This is not yet confirmed, however.

Daimler has stopped development of ICE engines, so will BMW and all other normal car makers (at least soon). Only supercar manufactures will continue with ICE.

Weber said the platform is described by Weber a “totally new development”, though he says it is “highly compatible” with the CLAR platform used for the likes of the 3 Series and X5, suggesting key elements of its engineering will be used by other new BMW i sub-brand models in the future. The iX does not utilise the CLAR platform (e.g. 4-series/i4) either, which allows multiple drive types. So, the BMW iX will remain a one-off on its all-electric platform since BMW will introduce a series of various electric vehicles from 2025 on the said new platform.

IMHO, those sources are muddying the waters at best and should not garner high levels of trust. Zipse has spoken recently about a “new cluster architecture” whereas I haven’t seen any details from Zipse or BMW about an additional unique platform underpinning the iX and other upcoming EVs.

My strong suspicion is iX sits on this newly evolved CLAR variant, and that this will be the case for all new BMW products (above the 1 and 2 families) for the foreseeable future. This is consistent with BMW’s oft stated strategy of using one platform for everything. Furthermore, if/when this changes, we’ll hear endless hyperbole about a new EV only architecture that will be an obvious departure from legacy ones.

(I currently have a 2012 -!- one that looks/feels/acts brand new and will look to trade it one year from now).

2022 may bring an LCI Refreash, but it wont be any major redesign.

Right sorry, I was talking about the LCI.

EOP of the current G05 X5 is clearly marked as 7/26 in the top post, which implies that the successor (if any, but it's hard to fathom that BMW would drop their X5 cash cow) will launch at that time as well.

With the rumours of the 1.5t being phased out in the near future, there's nothing to replace the entry level engines in the Mini and Euro BMWs?

I had a F56 Mini Cooper with the 1.5t. It was a really fun engine, albeit not very good. I always liked to call it a half sized M3 cause logically it's a S55 chopped in half (I know it doesn't work that way)

I'm not surprised there will be no "pedestrian" V8 since those would be replaced by a hybrid 6.
The continual downsizing continues, and I actually prefer hybridizing than turboing.

Very strange that the G26 430i xDrive will not be among the models offered at launch, instead being delayed into 2022. I would have expected the B48 + AWD to be the most popular configuration in the US.
