Then every tire sitting on the shelf at tires shops for more than 1.5-2yrs would be cracked.

Read the entire article, the picture shows the type of cracking caused by environmental effects. Clearly NOT the same as what happened to these. As you can see by Mike's many pictures, especially of the undamaged/undirtied tire, the surface of the rubber is fine. AGAIN, there's just those cracks pictured, in the single part of the tire, the same tire that had the packaging shredded, which I believe to be UPS damaged. For reference, copied Mike's own pictures again.
And a few paragraphs further on that same article: "Tire manufacturers' warranties typically cover cracking for a period of 4 years from the date the tire was purchased (receipt for the new tires or in-service date of the vehicle required) or four years from the date the tire was manufactured." So no, these tires should not have cracked due to environmental conditions. Especially since any of the deteriorating factors were not present, and according to the manufacturers own warranty, they should not crack even sitting on a shelf for 4 years. Which also corrects Mike's freak-out about them being 3 years old (which you also corrected him on, thanks) Tirerack's own site shows pics of their warehouse with tires stacked, no bags, no special oils, no rubber massages (or any of the other mis-information "contributed" on this thread). There's nothing wrong with storing tires in a basement for 18 months, period.
