“We are true innovators…perfecting cars that are already quite perfect.” Found that little comment insightful about how BMW views itself. I mean, looks are subjective, BMW’s over-engineering is a fact, but my HUD hasn’t changed in a decade except for speed limit info and a tachometer. Finally a step forward to a better HUD. This is actually a smart differentiator because a lot of automakers still don’t have one… corvette introduced theirs about 5 years before BMW in ‘99, btw. The other clue was “our vision…” versus, maybe, Tesla’s camera vision…

Split headlights, now this? BMW really is morphing into a French car maker from the 2000s.

I’ve had BMW huds on my BMW’s for the last 10+ years with the exception of the M2 CS which didn’t have one. Since the CS I’ve much preferred not having them. They’re too distracting and get in the way of the view. Our new macan GTS arrives next month and I’m relieved it comes without a HUD. Lotus emira comes later on and again very happy it comes without a HUD. Possibly I’m in a minority here?

The HUD is distracting if it is right in your FOV, at your focal point. I set mine low as possible. I believe that you can turn it off, use it only in certain circumstances if desired.

Good grief. BMW can’t get its story straight. Which is it, BMW? You want “eyes on the road” or you embrace touchscreens? BMW’s own press releases are hugely contradictory. Example: iDrive 9 vs. panoramic HUD
From the iDrive 9 press release: “After about 20 years, the digital user experience is dominated by touchpads, touch-sensitive smartphone displays and voice assistants. Swiping, tapping and speaking are the most common methods of interaction. The BMW Curved Display’s touchscreen functionality and dialogue using natural language represent the contemporary form of interaction between human and vehicle.” From the HUD press release: “We are taking our proven “eyes on the road – hands on the wheel slogan to a new level.” So, which is it? Do you embrace eyes-on-the-road and “hands on the wheel”, or do you want touchscreens everywhere? You can’t have both. This is all marketing nonsense, and a sign that BMW is losing its way when it comes to the driving experience and user interface. BMW obviously doesn’t really have an overall strategy here, other than “save money” and “pass this off with a bunch of marketing mumbo-jumbo” Last edited by diablo2112; 03-16-2023 at 11:19 AM.. |

I reckon touch screens will be gone. They are not safe and the removal of the dial was a huge error.

I like that BMW is thinking about enhancing the HUD to new levels. Moving the instrument cluster to a HUD. Using some of the smart technology, it could display the most important stuff front and center, less important to the side. Examples. If you are exceeding speed limit, show that in display, otherwise, remove it. If you are manually shifting, show the RPMs at the shift points, then move it to the side. The current setup for navigation is a good example of useful HUD displays, but could be enhanced, like maybe showing a pic of street view when you are supposed to turn.
I have the HUD in my X3. Right now it is nice, but not a must have. Very little information, not very dynamic, and not smart. If BMW does innovate on it, I could see it changing the interior of automobiles in a big way. Their concept shows all those ugly screens gone, which is possible with a good HUD. It might even bring back the dials and buttons that people love so much. Removing the touch screen removes that input control that is a fad now. In the concept they had it embedded in the dash, but it could easily bring back the idrive controller and some nearby buttons integrated with the HUD. |

I don’t think you are really far off. You might be spot on, except the heroin will be mandatory and called something else. |

Wow. I just 🤮 . Did he really say, in his German accent, a ‘portal to the virtual world’? I’ll buy a HoloLens instead - cheaper, better sex (I’ve heard…).

Imagine a windscreen that can be manipulated like your desktop computer! Imagine moving icons (MPH/RPM/BPM/etc.) around the windscreen as you like, and place them where ever you like!

Yep, BMW are innovators…of crap. With distracted driving accidents increasing it makes great sense to turn a car’s windshield into a tv/photo screen. Brilliant! Fail.
