I think the stock rod bolt torque procedure is much worse on the S65 than on the S54. The S65 procedure is 3 stage tightening 3 times per bolt, obviously with 2 loosenings in between. Maybe to pre stretch the bolts? With 2 more cylinders as well. It is a lit of separate actions. Not counting removal of original bolt, it’s 11 actions per bolt. Times 16 for the 16 bolts, it’s 176 stages of loosening and tightening.

I think anyone can do it but it needs care and patience. On a fixed labor price bearing change, the shop is going to make more money getting its customer to pay extra for ARPs that require an hour less labor to install. And for the customer paying by the hour for labor, the added cost of the ARPs is probably a wash against the saved labor.
I saved the $200 on fancy bolts when I did mine, plus the only ARPs out in 2014 may have had issues if torqued to ARPs spec. If I do the job again, I’d probably use ARP. I helped someone do the job with ARPs from VAC that supposedly provide the correct torque and it was much easier. Probably saved an hour over the factory bolts. |
