Got mine done this Saturday. Dropped the car off in the morning and it was ready by 3pm. I thought I could get the airbag recall done as well but they said it wasn't my time yet. I think they are waiting for me to get shrapnel in my face before they agree to fix it.

I took my M3 in for the recall a few months ago and here is the result:
According to the repair instructions for the recall (available at: https://bmw.oemdtc.com/Recall/RCRIT-17V087-2800.pdf), the cable should be measured before cutting. The result being that the cable should be looped around before making its way into the crimp. My cable is now to short to redo the repair myself and I would have to replace the entire cable if I wanted to eliminate the severe kink in the cable. My understanding is that you typically do not want cables to be tweaked like that, especially right before a connection point. Let me note that a BMW CCA member had his cable repaired only to lose his car in a fire. The fire was attributed to the cable repair! Also, if you buy a completely new battery cable, the connector appears to be exactly the same as those that are subject to the recall. Meaning that I'd have to buy the cable, install it, and then install the recall repair kit. I am curious to hear what those of you with expertise in this area think. Is this a problem or not really? Thanks! |

To rantarM3 above or others - where is that cable located? Behind glove box or in trunk?
Mine's in for repair now, and have concerns about the yahoos here in MS.....

This reminds me of a story i had long ago on my loved 1992 Nissan Maxima Sport Edition model. It had intermittent power failures and one time, the engine turned off while driving and the steering wheel anti-theft locked the wheel before it was fully stopped. The car continue to roll into a grass field and I had the reflex to open the door and jump out before it fell off a cliff.

I have the airbag recall done... but I'm honestly terrified to go into a dealer for anything. I've never had anything done by BMW, and given how well mine has done with my amazing Indy's work, I'm just not wanting to drop it off at BMW to potentially be fucked in the ass with shitty work that will cost me thousands or tens of thousands. Any ideas to get me over my fears? Any way to protect, legally, against them fucking something up?

My plan, is to do as much of the prep work possible at home and delivery my car with the dash apart and make the upgradeable components readily available. At least that should reduce shoddy work, broken tabs, etc.
Then I'm going to hammer into the tech that they disconnect the battery before doing anything. And hope for the best...

unfortunately, dealerships apprehension is well justified. Last time they removed my dashboard for a faulty evaporator (which in itself was a battle to get them to acknowledge the AC wasn't cooling properly) they mismounted the dashboard back and put tool slipping marks on the plastic parts. And that's with telling them to be careful. I switched dealers too, it's the same everywhere except maybe in major big cities.

Mines in the shop now for this one. Can cause power loss n other gremlins. Of course the dealership found something wrong, mecatronic sleeve in tranny was bad...4500$ luckily that extended warranty I picked up came through and covered it.

I had the most recent recall done and they just slapped the door sills back on, carpet sticking out, only 3 of the 4 tabs connected. I didn't say a word, just bought the vehicle home and completed the job. and generally speaking, you will usually find missing or stripped screws through normally serviced items. |

Confirmed. When they replaced a rear speed sensor they stripped a screw in the trunk then had the audacity to tell me they didn't do it when nobody ever worked on the rear (+original owner). I evaluate odds of damage (most goes unnoticed) for each visit to a dealership to be close to 1 out of 3 as most people don't inspect their work and can't look at the innards
