I got out of my POS turbo 4 banger because this seemed like an upgrade. However, if your engine is going to blow up, its not an upgrade. Stick the looks and leather, I had over 125k on my 4banger engine and had modified the hell out of it and it was faster than this car. All I picked up is bigger monthly payment and a bigger problem, and honestly I dont modify it because I am too worried about it voiding my warranty or blowing the engine....so on top of everything else its boring because you cant work on it. .....Okay I feel better I will stop now.
Haha let it all out! I understand the frustration. I look at e92's all day and just lust over them. But I know I could just be in for bigger problems than I want to deal with honestly.

Seriously? I hope you are hearing much more about M3s than that a preventative maintenance rod bearing change is worth considering because a very tiny percentage of cars have had issues.

the rod is thrown when either the rod has a failure its self, or the more likely is that a rod bolt failed. I have had more than a few race motors spin a rod bearing and not had the rod thrown. but I have also seen many that the rod bolt or rod broke and had this issue.

Yes. Seriously. The proof is all around this forum. Again, I don't consider a $2500 rod bearing replacement "preventative maintenance" but to each his own.

My point was that the rod bearing issue is a tiny part of what people say about M3s. If you read nothing but M3 rod bearing problems then you don't read much.

When it is your vehicle, you don't say to yourself "ah, it's ok because this only happens to to a small percentage so I'll suck it up as simply being that unlucky .07 percent and pay $25K. Looking at it that way, you should keep that same attitude if it happens to you 10 times. It's just $250K for your M3 but it is only a tiny tiny tiny percentage of the cars.

Come to think of it, you are insignificant because you are 1 out of hundreds of billions of people who have walked this earth. You don't need to be serious about anything in your life because it is useless. You represent such a small percentage.

If mine fails, I will be 100% pissed and won't give a darn about reading about an M3. I am at 200+ in my 3K 2001 Honda Civic that I've been driving for 2 weeks since my M3 is waiting for me to replace the gears in the actuator.

Hmmf, I feel so much better now. And yet the small percentage perspective is rational and is reason to not worry and enjoy. I have $105K and running fine minus the actuator.

~26,000 E9X M3s were sold in US and Canada, so 1% is 260. Are were even close to this number in rod bearing failures? I don't think so.

Every example of a thrown rod that I could find on an OEM street S65 was a result of a spun bearing. There are other causes as you mention but no one has established that the bolts are prone to failing themselves on this engine.

I am talking motors in general not just the OEM S65. I have had many race motors throw a rod.

Yeah, because every single owner of E9X M3's sold in North Amerca is a member of M3post and every M3post member reports his/her engine failure, makes sense.

If you spin a bearing...you can throw a rod. Fact is no one knows what the cause is.

Also with aftermarket warranty companies you are required to show and prove what EXACTLY caused the engine to fail. Even though some of their packages cover everything in the damn engine they still request teardowns etc....

I also feel its silly when people compared other non performance cars to performance cars.

all those economy cars are going to be more reliable than high end performance cars. they use more extreme parts that try to get the most performance while reliable as possible.

hell you can buy a 300k lambo, and i bet that civic will go longer without any problems.

I would guess that only a small fraction of M3 owners are on this forum or use shops that report to this forum. I think the number could be 1 percent but probably not any higher or word would be out to the extent bmw would have to do something about it like they did with the E46M3 rod bearings.

I understand everyones concern.. But being that everyone knows rod bearings are prone to failure, everyone who doesnt do the preventative maintainance because they believe it only happens to 1% of us are complete morons. When you become that 1%, you will be very pissed. People also need to factor in the e60 m5 s85 failures too.. Is it not very odd the this generation of bmw high revving engines are having the same failures. unusual bearing wear and spun bearings. Its also odd that bmw has updated a major part in an engine, but no recalls were done. I may be wrong buy didnt they try to hide any trace of a updated part by deleting the old part numbers. No one has the balls (even me) to start up a class action lawsuit and start making bmw have a recall in relation to updating the rod bearing or footing the bill for past failures..

For example the e46 m3 subframe failures. It took bmw almost 10 years and a class action lawsuit to finally admit the subframes were a problem. They finally started footing old bills, checking subframes for cracks and reinforcing anyone who needed so. I happen to come in after the recall period so paid out of pocket any way. its funny how every body judges only by the number of failed engine which is not even correct . You are suppose to be judging by the amount of unusual bearing wear, which then results in a failed motor

So how bout you guys do a poll by the amount of people who had the bearings replaced. Out of those people how many had unusual bearing wear. Lets see if the percentage is still only 1%.. Same like the e46 m3, you didnt judge buy the amount of complete subframe failures. You judge by the amount of people who had cracks which will lead to subframe failure.

I bet if someone brought this to a lawyer, with all the evidence of bearing wear, you guys would have a lawsuit.. When it comes to my time, i will try to find the people who handled the subframe lawsuit. In the mean time people need to keep posting failures and bearing wear with evidence so we can have a fighting chance

Correct. And a tune will do nothing to help your case.

Aftermarket warranties want to make money...it's taking them a long time to figure out that they are losing money on BMWs. Which is why I'm against aftermarket warranties. Nonetheless they are starting to figure it out and I would expect that it will only get harder to get a claim paid in the future.

I have a strong suspicion that the U.S. has a higher failure rate due to the type of usage an M3 will typically see. Short trips, frequent starts, and city traffic.
