My 1966 Corvair automatic was so cheap, it also did not come with a park, just reverse, neutral, drive and low on a dash shifter. Either leave in gear (won't start in gear though) or put in neutral and apply parking brake.

People said the same about auto park, it's called progress. You don't know how to parallel park, you're a soccer mom who doesn't know how to drive a MT but still want to be a race car driver poseur, now you can.

I asked my passenger to reach in the back seat and grab the manual.

And I turned off the engine.

What do you know? The "P" indicator magically appears on the instrumentation display.

Now, as a person that drives this car almost every day since March 2013 (30,000 miles) I can absolutely state that this is so frakking simple that it's like someone (who doesn't own a refrigerator) bitchin' that they don't know why they have to press a lever to get ice to fall out of the door when they could just open the door and grab a handful.

I'll describe the complicated process to place a DCT vehicle into "Park"

1. Turn off engine.

For the naysayers, here is a seven-second YouTube video:

I think many of you are missing the point here with the comments on 'this is progress' etc... Maybe the car automatically going into Park when shut off is progress, but the system with the warning message as shown in the article is counter intuitive. You get a warning to put the car in park, but there is no option to put it in park on the gear shifter. Maybe the message should say, "turn off the car to engage Park". The existing message 'implies' that you should take some additional action before turning the car off.

So easy, you asked for the manual to put the car in park.

The point you are missing is that is an error message that only happens when the door is opened while the car is still running. The message does imply that you should take action (turn off the car, which puts the car in park) before exiting the vehicle. Really not that difficult.

A logical person wouldn't assume turning off the engine puts the car in park.
Nobody is arguing once you know that fact, it's still difficult.
People jump from car to car without the need to read the manual on how to put specific vehicles in park.

Couldn't agree more. After my brother bought his X6 I went out with both him and my dad, who is by no means someone I'd consider a dumb individual. We left him in the car and he needed to move it, after we got back to the car he was like why the hell is this shifter so stupid? Should he really need to rtfm after driving for the better part of 50yrs?

Everyone in my family now has BMW's but I can honestly say the shifter is different just to be different. It is not better.

I now have an Audi S4 and my buddy has a panamera pdk - I've never needed to read the manual on how to get them into park.

And did not need the manual. Figured it out before I opened the book.

By the way, there are tons of things in the manual that many people need to read about. How to work Comfort Access for the trunk-while-top-down; where's the oil dip stick (ain't none); how to do a software update. For a few of those, I've had to crack open the book more than once. For the "P" on DCT -- just turn off the engine.

My page 201 is totally blank. Do you mean updating the hard drive for the navigation system? I have the 2008 CD based nav.

I just looked back at the (c) 2010 manual, and it doesn't have the information.

My manual is (c) 2011 for Model Year 2012, and it is on page 201.

www.bmwusa.com/update is a referenced URL, too, but it's a dead link!

See pic of manual page.

Agreed, but look at life in general and the increasing complexity, from the Cambrian explosion (the true sexual revolution) to us and the increasing complexity of the social systems we are in...it's not so much about simplifying things rather understanding that things are complex and not black & white. And my universal truth still stands, extinction is the rule...we will be replaced soon enough, starting with those that can't park a car
