Wow what shitty mechanics!
The paint peeling off is actually fairly common in these engines, as I have seen quite a few s65 engines with the paint deteriorating... I think its just age and oil exposure that corrodes it over time... Not sure about the chemical compound of it... Not really sure If it would be worth the trouble to recoat the inside, as removing every micro drop of oil residue from the cover is going to be a real bitch! Maybe easier to just buy new covers already painted and coated... |

Visible copper, particulate streaks, and parting line wear. Good catch. Lot of wear on the lowers compared to most I've seen.

Also, you can clearly see one of the screws that holds the VANOS adjuster together is backing out (under the spring). |

Just got my bearings changed at 96000km. / 60000 miles. I have just had my M3 for few weeks and this was the first thing to do. I really didn't see the point of doing oil analysis at this mileage because all in all it isn't that expensive to change the bearings. The guy who changed my bearings is making his living by changing rod bearings to S65 and to S85 motors. He also showed me bearings that had been changed at 35000 miles and they were in really bad shape. My bearings were in quite good condition for 60000 miles.

M3 is my second car and it sits most of the time in my garage so it doesn't get more than about 5000-8000km per year so the new bearings are good for me quite many years from now on |

I only drive it only in summer , and store it in winter in my garage to avoid roadsalt . ------------------------------ As for you bearings , Your mechanic probably means the aluminum bearings , BMW had to do it for the Euro-Environmental requirements because lead was forbitten in Europe . And actually they are the same , because sadly we see them fail as well with high and low miles/km's on it => http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=786615 ----------------------------- The biggest disappointment for me personal of the last two years was to see last week that they are failing as well (2 cases within a year) with replaced (aftermarket) bearings from suppliers who thought that they were better with a bigger clearance for better oil supply and with a coating . Huge respect for those people for their research and development , but personal I think we need to search in another direction to find the real fix for the S65 worldwide bearing trouble . I'm sorry..But for the moment I/we can only hope for...

Well i succumbed to the bearing hysteria and proceeded with changing my bearings. I purchased BE in the first group buy but haven't installed until now. I will have these old bearings in my hands on friday when i pick up the car.
2008 with 71,800 miles: Replacing with BE + OEM bolts Doesn't look as bad as some others seen here. But i think there are signs of oil starvation

So my 2008 M3 was a one owner I bought 12 months ago with 69K kms on the clock. In the last 12 months I did one speed event and track day. I changed the oil 10w-60 a total of 4 times over that period and most recently had the oil analysed. Traces of copper and lead showed up but nothing to worry about I was told. The car had never missed a beat or shown any signs, noises of bearing issues. Still with no warranty and not wanting to spend big money on a new engine I decided to invest in some preventative maintenance. I went with the VAC coated bearings because I did not want to wait any longer. I chose to use my local mechanic Galvsport do all the work as they had experience doing this job. They pulled the all the bearings and they showed consistent wear, with a couple of them showing wear thru to the copper. Well worth doing I think. My cost was $2600 parts and labour. The car was back on the road after a couple of days and is running fine. Peace of mind was worth $2600 for me. This work was done back in October 2015 and I have engine oil tested every 5000 kms with no issues at all.

I'm considering purchasing a 60k-ish (90tkm) manual M3 and for the peace of mind I'd do this as the first thing.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."
