Heavy and laggy car imo. Looks great though, and sounds good. Not as good as the e92 to me. |

But maybe it was good for it’s day. 4.2L direct injection 8250 rpm at the beginning of production in 2006 (euro). BMW did not have direct injection for the S65 at the end of production 7 years later in 2013.

The newer direct injection engine has been out since 2009 in the 997.2 and 991 911 Turbo and seems to be doing well. I think I’d rather have a newer car. And I’d like PDK, which improved in the 997.2 and later cars.

To clarify, the 997.2 was the first gen with pdk.

My dos pesos....
I currently own a 2011 M3 E92 and a 997.1 4S Two very different cars, living in So Cal and having a backyard in LA with great canyon and mountain roads is a treat to own both. The 997.1 4S is my precision tool capable of hold a corner faster and allowing me to feel like a competent driver. Not much power or torque but the rush of driving wide open in 3rd and 4th gear on my roads is a freakin treat. It doesn't throw you back in your seat like a 911 turbo but I enjoy driving slow cars fast versus fast cars slow. I have stock exhaust so I don't enjoy the sound track as much as the M3. I tend go faster than it feels or sounds which is kind of cool as well, 120+ mph is a breeze in this car with stock PASM. The M3 well that is just a different animal due to weight, motor, brakes and overall balance. My car has KW clubsports, straight pipe, and exhaust. It sounds faster than I am really going, ha ha. I enjoy the same canyon roads because I need to drive the car harder to maintain the same corner speed. I feel like I am way more on the edge. The sound track is worth the price of admission in my book. My car stays above 5K the entire time on twisty roads. It is a real treat to drive on twisty roads and daily driving on the 405 fwy. I love both cars; 911 classic balanced car - M3 so rewarding above 5K and can honestly do it all. My current petrol issue, what next! Honestly for the amount of money I have in these cars upgrading doesn't make sense value wise. Yes a GT3 reving up to 9K is special or the M2 comp is nice, but the entry ticket is my two cars combined. I struggle with the value prop there... Only thing that has my eye currently is GT4 or GT3 but I cant get myself to give up my M3 to pick one up. Going to the track is my next venture. IG: petrol.shift Quote:

I remember being in the forum in Spain many years ago where RS4s were putting down less whp than E46 M3s due to this. It can be DIY'd but it's pretty involved and will just keep happening

BMW’s N54 and other motors have DI. Recently, some car makers have added secondary port injection to get some gas into the intake and onto the backs of the valves to reduce carbon and goo. I cleaned the goo and carbon from my 2008 E61 535xi motor a couple of years ago and was amazed by how much there was. It had to be reducing the intake flow.

Life after the M3->another life with an M3.
Might supercharge it seeing how it smokes everyone on track including M2/M4s. The owner reported it just needs wider rear tyres and strong BBKs to compensate for extra acceleration.

You can buy a salvage titled 997 GT3 for the price of an extremely low mileage E9X...
https://www.copart.com/lot/29363999 I'm not going to lie. If I didn't live downtown I would probably get this thing and slap on some new bumpers and rear lid on. Looks like it may have been a track accident given the Hankook RS3s and the type of damage. |

I have to make an introductory post but first I have to drive it some more. So far it seems very, very nice. Drove it back to back vs my E92 and no, nothing will compare to a loud exhaust S65 with a Karbonius airbox, but driven in isolation it feels very nice. I liiiiikeeee
Got it, drove it home, put it up on the quickjack and it's been there ever since. Seats, harness bar, 6 points all ordered and will be going into the car soon Working on adapting my PFC E9X brakes to the F80 platform. Lots of solidworks work, reminds me of being an engineer |

You send your drawings out to be manufactured? I miss my Solidworks days. Still have an old run on my machine if I get bored and decide I need a better paper towel holder or the sorts. Last project was designing my own electronic ignition for my '71 Honda CB Twin, so maybe a bit more than paper dispensers... |

So I discovered there is no real life after the M3 so when I put it up for sale, I promptly took down the ad. I also discovered I only looked at buying another M3 when I wanted to sell mine!
Glad I didn't make that mistake! |

Why do we love M3s....
The right size, not too big & not too small Sporty but still comfortable for daily driving Track it on Sunday & drive it to work on Monday Canyon carver by nature but would get grocery/school runs if needed Practical & all season capable, could seat 4 in comfort Neither too light nor too heavy Available as sedan/coupe/convertible Manual tranny as well as DCT Purchase & Maintenence costs are high but still do able Good value for dollar compared to exotics Try to think, which other car does all the above in a similar or better way... Thought a lot... I feel that we should live with each generation of M3 for 5 to 7 years, then move on to the next generation of M3... every M3 generation is a different take on mostly the same philosophy.... experience them all & appreciate for what they are! Look at every M3 generation as period perfect, don't compare them! Thoughts... comments.... |

I sold my e92M 3 years ago for a 991.1 C2S, 7MT, which is hands down the best sports car I have owned, however, for my needs and current situation, e90 M would be the best car (baby on the way). Just sold the Porsche and I’m currently looking for an e90 M. F80s just don’t do it for me at all, maybe because I’m stuck in this period when e9x M3 was king, and the current market there’s no other car that appeals to me considering driving feel, power, handling, reliability, joy of ownership, community and aftermarket parts support. |

To be fair, the e9x M3 excels if you are able to rev it out regularly. If your driving is mostly city/traffic, then F80 M3 might be more fun. Maybe try the F80 for a few days (Turo rental...), then decide |

I had the privilege of driving a GT4 the other day. It's an amazing car, the most natural-feeling car I've driven in a loooong time and definitely the best driver's car I've turned a wheel in that was made in the past 10 years. Just so *good*. Immediately intuitive in every respect, *feels* perfectly sorted, just about all the time. They made the 3.8 sound amazeballs too. I've not driven a stock car that felt so cohesive since I first drove my car.
But if you want to carry more than two people, or want a car that shuts up and relaxes when you don't want to hoon (turning off the loud pipes just sortof makes it "less loud") or don't want the attention a Porsche gets you, well, you're sortof out of luck. I lurve the car, soooo much better than any 911 I've ever tried (not been in a 911 GT car yet sadly) but I'm one of those idiots who thinks the Coxsman is the better car, so I would think that. I gave myself a few days to see if it wormed its way into my brain and didn't let go, but nope. Appreciate, would not kick out of bed, but don't want for my own garage. Maybe the killer app is the 981 GTS for somebody who wants a pure street car Life after the M3? I wouldn't trade straight-up for my car. E90M 4eva
