It will and can detect a curb initially during approach but it will fall off the horizon as soon as you get closer. The front sensors in the OEM location on the e9X are too high to effectively detect curbs all of the time. If you're working with an undrilled bumper without holes I would consider placing the front sensor towards the bottom of the bumper like other BMW models.

So, can this be done on an M3 that never had PDC to begin with (no rear)? I really want to look into doing this, but I have no idea who down in South Florida can do it for me if I get the parts.

It's a little more involved but a full PDC retrofit can definitely be done.

I figure it would require more coding? I was thinking about ordering the part, then trying to find a coder. Do you think BMW would actually do the work? I know they charge like crazy for labor though.

Actually, from a coding only perspective while following the best practice methodologically it's the exact same amount of work. In other words, no more additional coding work to do a full PDC vs a front PDC only retrofit. I don't think that BMWNA has an approved retrofit path for the dealer to agree to to it. A savy dealer can easily do the work you also may be able to find a shop in your area to assist in the install and coding.

tlp,
How did you run the wiring of the Front PDC under the hood. The wiring from the ECU box to the front bumper. I cant close the ECU box because I have the wire that i ran through the firewall. Do you have pics of how the wiring is run under your hood.. Thanks

I don't have any pic's but I believe that piggy backed the headlight wiring harness for a stretch on the passenger side. It's fairly intuitive and straightforward. Just may sure that you don't waste too much harness length during the routing as run of wire is the exact length to the rear PDC module.

Thanks top for the prompt response. What I did is I ran the front pdc through the firewall as you had in one of ur posts and connected one end to the pdc unit in the trunk. The thing that threw me off and the instructions weren't clear to me atleast on how to route the wiring harness with sensor part out of the Ecu box so I can close the box.
I hope I m making sense

tlp,
Did you have issues putting back the front bumper after you installed the 2 middle sensors. There is no way my bumper will go back in place with the 2 middle sensors, there is no clearance. It just doesnt fit. My car is the 335ix 2009 but i was wondering how did you fit urs. Its a show stopper. Let me know what is ur thoughts

Ultrasonic sensors (4): 66208046453 (Jerez black, $139 new each) PDC Mounts (4): 51110432249 ($11 each) Now, I know I need cables and the ECU, and I'm sure I need something else. Would you by chance know the part numbers for the Rear PDC ECU and the kit? Thanks. |

I had to cut front rebar edge to fit the two middle sensors but unlike M3 these sensors will go off in crazy way because they sit on top 335 rebar. I tried to install 2011 335 rebar, same issues. I have to try install M3 rebar but it is costly so I am waiting till I get extra cash for this project. |

Well I am in the process of replacing my front bumper and front bumper support. The Autobody shop will not modify the front bumper support (by cutting it). The current one I have is damaged and need to be replaced. The autobody shop will only install the stock one which if they did then I cant install my 2 middle front PDC sensors.
Sam33 or anyone do you know the part number of any front bumper support that will allow me to install the middle front PDC sensors. I have a 2009 335i xDrive Coupe I need to have something ordered by end weekend otherwise the autobody shop will order the stock. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks RB Quote:

I did retrofit on my e82 with all the coding etc. done by myself and must say this guide was very helpful. On RHD cars pdc cable is routed via firewall under abs pump, not ecu as this way cable will be to short and sensors will be the other way round

Are those circular/crosshaired markings behind the bumper there from the factory (to make perfectly aligned installation for PDC sensors, or did OP put them there so he knew where to drill? I imagine it'd be very easy to make these not evenly installed without there being some sort of template.
Thanks! |
