Imagine it is the mid-1980s and your Dad owns a perfect 1960s Shelby GT350 or GT500 or 1970s Mach 1 or even a mid-1960s Corvette Stingray? Then instead of giving you the keys after graduating high school or college, he sells it to someone from a classified ad for $25k...
There are some cars that are so special that you keep them for your kids, or keep them in the family. The other issue is that BMW is making cars that are worst and worst each generation. The build quality is poor and the plastic all over the car disintegrates after only 3-5 years. They also jack up the price of the new M-Sports, that cost as much as the prior generation ///M Cars. Would anyone pay $65k for an M-Sport 3-Series or 4-Series? Seriously?? The new ///M cars are unaffordable fully optioned. BMWs depreciate by 40-50% in only 3 years. I can't even compare my IB/Fox Red E90 M3 with 190k miles to my "new" 2015 F30 335i with an N55 PoS. A N/A V8 vs a 3.0L Turbo?? BMW botches most V8s they design, so you will see fewer and fewer of them in the future, in favor of a Turbo 6 cyl 3.0L or some krazy 6 cylinder + Electric Motor frankenstein powerplant. To prove this point...the new G80/G82 M3/M4 will have the hideous chipmunk grill from the new 4 Series Coupe. The M3/M4s share the front end from the 4-Series each generation. So buying a new G80 M3 isn't a way to avoid becoming the newest member of The Chipmunks along with Alvin, Simon, and Theodore. So if you want a cool/fast new M3, get an X3M with the same S58 engine. Or jump to a Porsche Macan/Cayenne Turbo. Wish the Porsche SUVs had a N/A V6 option. BMWs are much more customizable vs other brands...which is why they are still popular with enthusiasts. Good luck coding a Porsche in your driveway... So everyone feels the same way about their E46 and E9X M3s. The only thing that comes close is an Audi R8 or a 911, both of which are impractical. I was eyeing a MB CLS AMG back when the E9X M3s came out...but the color options and interior weren't very "modern" in 2008. The iPhone came out in 2007...so we were still at the birth of the universe, right after the big bang. Cheers Last edited by nyc_dude; 08-12-2020 at 07:52 PM.. |

Don't plan on selling mine. It's a keeper.
But I do want to add a GT3 or maybe even an AMG GT to my collection in the next year. Or maybe the new Boxster Spyder. My next one will be a dedicated sports car platform for sure. It's time. |

Hard to argue with the all around capability of an E90 M3 especially given it has a "real" back seat with a decent trunk, and that combination was key for me.
A tougher decision was getting one with the DCT, but I have been very happy with my choice and now it can be an option in a pinch if the lovely bride needs to drive it. Quote:

my '11 got flooded during Harvey here in houston.. had 65k miles on the clock. Insurance paid what I thought was a pretty handsome amount for it so I thought this is the perfect time to upgrade a P car, Gtr etc.. two months later im back in a '11 that i found with 26k miles. Like others on here its not my daily so that definitely helps to keep it. plan is to keep it forever

I still have mine...my logical brain says sell but then I take over. Something tells me to hold onto. The car doesn't even rattle inside and it's gonna be 10 years old!

I sold my 08 E92 after 2 years of ownership because I was moving to a place where I didn't need a car, so not really looking for "something better" just looking to avoid storage/insurance/depreciation for however long I was not going to need a car.
But - when I left there and was back on the market for a fun car and looked for something better, I couldn't find it. So, I bought the same car back 2 years after I sold it. Not a similar or identical car, literally the exact vehicle I previously owned with the same VIN because it happened to be back up for sale. |

I had a new coupe for 3 years (2012) and loved it. Then as the lease expired I jumped into an M235 which I liked but never loved (mainly suspension shortcomings and secondarily the power delivery), so 2 years in I started looking for an E9x again. Found an ‘09 slicktop sedan nearly 3 years ago and couldn’t be happier.
134k miles on this one and still going strong. Can’t ever see getting rid of it at this point.

When I got it back I did some maintenance including the rod bearings... although I still haven't cracked 50K miles. By the way - I love your space gray with the black wheels. Perfect combo of classy looking but skips the dirty-in-5-minutes jet black. I really wanted a sparkling graphite/6MT/E92 no nav but those things are like unicorns. |

BTW, my car only has 22k on the clock and i did rod bearings at 20k. I figured i would not tempt fate with it being supercharged. As you might suspect, the bearings were pretty clean...

Mine looked pretty good much to my frustration.
I posted pics on the rod bearing example thread: https://www.m3post.com/forums/showth...2#post24518522 |

I have tried to sell my car 2 or 3 times and everytime I get close to closing I regret the decision and back out. Something about this car is just too special to give up, If I did sell, it would probably be just to get another e92 M3 in a more desirable color I like such as interlagos blue or santorini blue. A race derived V8 engine, 8000+ RPM, hydraulic steering, and a sensational engine note in a sport sedan is a dying breed.
I also own a Lotus Evora 400 which is a great car in a different way. I think on my short list of a future car I'd like to own is; a 2018 GT3, GT3RS, Ferrari 458, or Scuderia to compliment my M3.

I own a F80 CS, always wanted a E92 M3 finally found a my unicorn a 13' E92 Frozen with only 30k on her. Absolutely love the driving experience vs the CS! The F80 can be unpredictable at times while the E92 you feel like you have predictable control. The best way I can describe it is the E92 can get side ways and come out gracefully and elegantly while the F80 is an arrogant prick that says fuck it and hold on!
