i kinda feel its not worth it and soon enough it will be bmw's problem

"there is an SIB for diagnosing the notch - the 2nd gear issue you described - some notchiness is normal, but we want you to bring it in so we can take a look." Again, after i came back in town, i was like this car is fine, it's just the forums that make me paranoid. If something comes up, i will pursue it further. also, i will probably need an oil change soon. I will have them diagnose it then, with me in the car and report back after that.

I have some notchiness and when I put it into 2nd, it sounds like a door bolt sliding into place when locking. Kinda a metallic sound. Is this normal? |

Not yet. I have an appointment in a couple weeks. I will be sure to update the community on any relevant findings.

I forgot to remind Sean05, again! I think he has some paperwork that will help. I will let you guys know what I come up with after my service appointment. There are a lot of guys on here that have had the tranny replaced, I'm sure. So, I'm hoping they can also chime on on what the procedure was and what the work order looked like.

In higher gears your wheel speed gear match your engine gear much better because you've already built up the wheel speed gear and gears are closer in ratio in 3-6 than 1-2 M3 4.06 1st 2.4 2nd 1.58 3rd 1.19 4th 1.00 5th 0.87 6th The closer to a 1 - 1 ratio means the engine's output (to the trans) and the Transmissions output (to the tires) are equal. Update: full service summary here: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=565772
My transmission was deemed to be completely normal. The resistance from 1->2 and 3->2 is considered within normal range. Shop foreman said it feels great. I think this forum gets me over thinking about things! time for me to shut up and drive.

I understand no car is perfect, but this thread is really scaring me away.
I'm about to ditch leasing a 335i (don't want HPFP issues), in order to save up for a couple years and finance a CPO M3 (e92 hopefully). After reading this thread, I feel like I'm not so safe going with the M3. It will be my first MT car, and I just don't know what to ask/say

Getting my transmission replaced this week. Has anyone experienced the same issue after having the replacement complete? I am worried that the same tranny would be used; thereby, just delaying the inevitable.

mine has definitely been better after the replacement,i'm glad i did it.besides doing the 1200 mile fluid replacement i mentioned ,i also followed the manual's break-in rec for a new or "renewed" trans of not exceeding 5500 rpm for 300 miles.maybe the first owner didn't do that.
with my old one,the mechanic thought someone had missed or jammed a shift before i had it,not that there was any inherent defect in the trans.the 1-2 shift is not perfect now,but much smoother.as post #54 said, this shift is inherently the most difficult.the 3-2 downshift works great if i blip the throttle first.all the other shifts are like buttah, especially when it's warmed up.good luck. I just had my transmission replaced 2 weeks ago at BMW South County. My third gear would vibrate all the time to the point of hearing it. My first thread on M3Post was actually about that problem and it got no responses but a year after complaining about it to 4 different BMW dealers, they finally replaced it. Thus far, everything is running very smoothly. I wasn't told about replacing the fluid though after 1200 miles. Should I be doing that?

bmw pays for it to be done when a new car reaches 1200 miles as part of a break- in service which also includes oil and diff fluid.since my trans was new,i figured i'd treat it the same way,out of an excess of caution.

Mine is just as described in this thread. In addition, mine really doesn't like to go into first or reverse when cold. I have to engage second, then first, then reverse sometimes. I wish I would have dealt with it while under warranty. It wasn't THAT bad at that point though.
It's really ironic that I ended up with a 6MT with a crap tranny. I didn't even CONSIDER a DCT car because of all the things I'd heard about BMW automated manuals (E46 SMG specifically). Now it looks like DCTs are more problem free. Knowing what I know now, I still would have bought a 6MT though.
