Oddly I have always heard the opposite: that the SHR is better for larger people since their chests are proportionally larger. A regular HANS tends to dig into the pecs and collarbone of bigger people, whereas the SHR's arms will curve around it better.

This one is nearly impossible to improve without detailed telemetry. If you're overslowing by 10 MPH, yeah, that's easier to work on. But a couple of MPH is very difficult to tell through what you feel in the car. What you'll end up doing is reviewing telemetry, adjusting reference points, and testing the new reference points. Once you've got the ideal speed, you'll just trust the reference points and ignore what you feel.

I am getting into the ABS pretty consistently and letting it do its thing. Tires are PSS so they're overwhelmed quickly by the car's huge brakes.

Yeah we have both seats and harnesses at the correct angles. Still hated the Hans, mainly I didn't like how restrictive it felt and the padding didn't feel comfortable either

The top of the Hans for me is really where it dug into my collar bones. That's weird though how I feel and what you've heard are poor opposites! I can also see where the SHR would fit a bigger build person due to its range of motion

Did you ever try the gel pads instead of the standard foam ones?

I initially bought a traditional HANS and didn't like the way it fit. I kept it for my passenger but bought the SHR for myself and I like it a lot better. I think we discussed this before, but the straps/tethers on he SHR allow a lot more freedom and I think some of us were concerned about that at one point

I only watched his analysis of the first couple corners, but based on that and my analysis of your accel/brake traces, it looks like you're braking in a way that I've been making a conscious effort to stamp out for years... that is, braking at the last possible moment and stabbing the pedal as hard as possible.

Braking like that has an effect on your mindset. When you brake that late you're being thrown hard into your belts and your mind is slightly panicked, focused on controlling the slowdown of the car, with a shorter period of time to get it right. You've missed your optimal corner speed just because your time frame to nail it went by so quickly. And when you get on the brakes quickly you tend to come off them quickly, so on top of all that the car is pointed the wrong direction because you weren't able to trail brake effectively.

Try braking earlier but more softly, trail braking until the car has sufficiently rotated, applying some "maintenance throttle" to get you through the corner at exactly the right speed, and then rolling back to 100% throttle when you're in a position to fully commit, so that you're not doing gas-lift-gas.

It makes sense to brake as late as possible, but until you're an absolute machine of a driver, you have to give yourself ample time to nail the braking and get the car setup to make the most of the corner. An extra .2 seconds at full throttle doesn't count for much if you've blown the corner and the next straight.

During 2-hour-plus endurance racing stints I've always been surprised to find that my fastest laps will be after I've been in the car for some time, I'm comfortable, and I'm just trying to stay consistent. They're not necessarily the ones where I'm chucking it hard into every corner and trying to make up time. My inputs are smooth, my body and mind are relaxed. I'm not braking at the very last second, but the car is so composed going through the corner that the exit speed is just right and it makes up for the more relaxed braking.

Thanks, that's good advice. In other words, don't be so binary on/off with the brake pedal (same as the gas). My fastest laps are usually towards the end of the session, as well.

Hard to believe it's been three years already. I don't know why I get so attached to machines, but I'm going to miss this little guy. Small car with a lot of personality. With just over 29,000 miles on him, he paid for himself in the savings from the three sets of tires I would have had to put on the M3. Not to mention the cost of the 125+ refuelings that would have taken in my gas car. Godspeed, little one.

Not sure yet... they wanted $1k down and $150 a month for a new smart. That's almost double what I was paying for this one. Still cheap, but still a bummer.
Might get a early 90's Toyota pickup with a 22re 4cyl. Just a beater.

You can get a gently used F-150 for like $15k. Tons of room to haul shit and enough power to trailer the car if you want. Just avoid one with lots of gimmicky upgrades.

I lightly considered leasing one, but I don't think it's going to happen. It wouldn't fit in the driveway with the m3 and the wife's 335d. Garage is taken up already. Might just need to wait.

On the HANS topic, I'm a big guy (6'2 and 315 pounds) and I use a HANS Sport III in Large without issues. No issues with it digging into my chest or whatnot.

My seat is a RaceTech RT4119 WT (wide & tall), with Schroth Profi II harnesses. I can get the harnesses so tight I don't move at all and it's not uncomfortable at all.

Installed my schroth quick fit pro last night and took if for a test drive to make sure it was adjusted properly. Seems like a great compromise for someone who is not willing to go full racecar. TMS has the cheapest price around right now from what I could find. Install was painless and straightforward. It can be removed in about 10 seconds.
I am looking forward to not having to brace myself against the door at my next track event!

Picturing you getting out of that car reminds me of the old Bugs Bunny cartoon where Bugs is getting road rage from this tiny car in front of him. The car finally pulls over and this guy who is about 3 times the size of the car gets out.

Speaking of Schroth Quick-Fit Pros, I have one for the driver side e92 with an added ASM strap making it a full proper 6-point harness. Manufacturer date 2016. Looking for $300.

I personally loved the QFP, My Schroth Clubman 6pt is actually less comfy w/ a Hans II than the Quick fit IMO, might be moving to a Sparco 6pt 2" Hans harness.

How did you anchor the ASB harness under the seat??

I looked at this but didnt see a way to fit it under the seat.
