Stopped messing with wheel fitment long time ago and have just been happy with standards plus a 265 tire. Works with no headaches lol

Depends on the tire itself (tread width )
While it may fit the rim fine , if you get over square you will get more side to side squirm because the side walls can't keep it contained as well.

Within reason, wider wheel under the same tire will perform better.
Not worth chasing but if you are limited by tire selection but can run whatever width you want for instance, good to consider.

All true but again, i don't think it's unreasonable on a 10 vs 10.5 up to 285.

roastbeef I'm starting to think about doing a roof rack like yours to transport slicks to/from the track. Curious if you have a carbon fiber roof and also what all parts you used, willing to purchase an aluminum basket of some kind since I don't have access to a fabricator. Also only want two on top for weight reasons with the carbon roof, if it's even okay to transport stuff on it. Any info is appreciated!

i think the roof rack weight limit is 160lbs. i think my rack and the oem bases weigh around 15lbs. i wanted the weight to be evenly distributed. three tires in-line was too long, and the tires side by side were way too wide. two tires, in-line was perfect. i forget the weight, but two tires plus the rack was well under the maximum weight and was well balanced on the supports. i do have the carbon roof, but that doesn't matter. every one of these cars has roof rack holes in the trim. the oem bases don't touch anything you can see with the connectors closed. i'll take more detailed pics next time i put it on. my requirement was that all i had to do was unscrew the four bolts that hold the rack on, and i could lift it off myself. how i achieved this, was i dropped off two tires off at my fab guy for sizing. he tried to bend some of the 1" aluminum tubing, but it kept breaking, thats why i wound up with a rectangular basket. not super cool looking, but gets the job done. when it was done, i went back over there and put the bases on my roof and put the basket on the bases to see where we would need to weld the tabs on the basket. it was important that the tabs sat flat on the base mounts when the bases were secured so there wasn't any weird tension on the basket when it was secured on the car. i also didn't want it to spring in any particular way or hold tension that would make it difficult to take on or off. the bases secure with four bolts that go into threaded nuts which are part of the roof. i take them on/off with my power ratchet. putting the rack on and taking it off takes just a few minutes from start to finish. it has been really convenient.

I did a roof rack basket set up to transport wheels to the track. Bought a "vault" roof basket off amazon and then modified it to fit oem Bmw cross bars. Works like a charm. With three on the roof and two in the car, it gives you a ton of extra room for canopies, coolers, etc. plus it gives your car the badass weekend warrior look

Those are so quaint. Always gives me a good chuckle when I see them in the paddock. Likewise I give everyone else a good chuckle climbing in and out of the trunk to get wheels. Can't wait to roll it off the trailer this season and wander off in search of coffee.

i considered a trailer for a short minute. the cons outweigh the pros. the rack was simply easier. there were more steps to implementing a trailer, and the steps were more complicated.
1. figure out a hitch for the m3 2. figure out wiring for an m3 that wouldn't trigger electrical problems 3. buy trailer 4. store trailer 5. pay registration annually for trailer steps for building a rack 1. talk to buddy/fab guy 2. find oem bases 3. hang rack away in garage when not in use and don't pay registration or maintain anything. i have about $300 into my rack.
