Is there any more specific descriptions of the differences between the D1-5 and S1-6 Drivelogic Mode selections? I mean, I understand the general concept of each number, but is there anything more technical?

That 58-page DCT manual doesn't really cover it.

I'm in. The DCT in my 11 E92 is considerably better than the SMG in the E46 M3 that I used to have.
