Video of removing #4 ignition coil
I created a quick video showing how I removed the #4 ignition coil without any special tools. Unless wire is a special tool.

McGiver coil puller
I just changed the plugs on my '08 M3. I read all the blogs, and was worried about pulling the coils. When I removed the cover over the colis I saw that there is a "button" on the top of the coils that is 1 inch in dia, with a stem of 5/8". I McGivered a puller by sawing a 5/8" slot in a pipe hanger. It worked beautifully. The hole of the pipe fits my finger perfectly and it is rounded over for painless coil extraction. For the rear coils I used a pry bar in the hole with a block for a fulcrum. See photo. The string makes it easy to retrieve the puller when you drop it, as you inevitably will. If anything falls onto the engine pan the gremlins eat it and it is never seen again.
The entire job took about 2 hours, including time to buff and clean the parts. |

Grabbed a division m puller. Great product. :-)
Changed the plugs in about an hour. No need to remove anything else other than the airbox and the coil pack covers. So happy I didn't pay a stealer to do this for me! |

Coil pack covers were a booger for me when I did it. Don't know if it is the desert heat or what by the did not want to come off at all. What a pita.

I just spent a solid 90 minutes on the passenger side. At first I thought I'd try some thick string to wrap around the coil head and yank up but that snapped. In a panic I grabbed a metal coat hanger. It was a pain to get right, but it worked. Finding a way to pop the coils took a solid hour. Finagling with the rear most coil and plug took vast majority of the procedure.
Not sure how long these plugs have been in the car but they were thinly coated in oil. Now off to the driver's side. Hope this goes quicker.

6 out of 8 were super easy with the coil puller. The back 2 I had to use the coil puller AND a coat hanger just because I couldn't get my hands in there. Putting them back was an even bigger pain in the ass

I wouldn't doubt if the plugs I pulled had been in there for 70k miles. Swapping the plugs has made a HUGE difference in power. Can't believe this is what I was missing! The front end lifts under WOT like never before.
Interestingly enough though, I now get an engine malfunction warning when I hit 8k RPM or so. Not sure what that's about or if it's at all related. No code reader so I'll probably run over to AutoZone to get them pulled for free.

Does the dealer have a special tool for those rear ones? Their book time isn't too crazy on the job, surprisingly.

It took me about 90 minutes to get this done and that was solely because I dropped an airbox screw twice and had to spend time fishing the darn thing out each time! Definitely worth it to buy the Division M Puller and a good swivel socket off of ebay. In total, I think I spent $100 on this and could do it in an hour next time.

put a towel in the engine bay when changing the plugs
the instructions on spark plug change were terrific. agree the coil remover is a nice to have, although i still broke the connection on the cylinder closest to the passenger side. i managed to wrangle the coil out with the appropriate amounts of sweat and patience.
i would add stuffing a towel or something alongside the engine that can catch the random dropped wrench, etc. i dropped the Division M coil puller whilst placing it on the first coil and it managed to go right under the engine - a complete PITA to get out. |

As mentioned the key is being able to get some leverage for those rear two given space and also having the correct extensions in order to get these in/out.
The puller is neat but does not fully solve the issue. If a hole were to be available to provide additional 'support' it would be great :-) A small wooden block can be used to provide the required extra leverage. I would also move/swap the rear coils towards the front in case they were 'more stressed' in the removal process. |
