With the introduction of the new I-6TT found in the M4/3, I dont see BMW planning on a cross plane V8 anytime in the near future. They had a cross plane in the GT2 E92 M3 and went back to the flat plane configuration with the new Z4 GTE. For whatever reason they chose to do this, it wouldn't be predictable for them to attempt a cross plane on a street engine, if the race engine didn't meet their expectations.

Dinan has finally made the switch from the S62 to the S65 in their race cars. It'll be interesting to see how they develop this motor in the years to come.

You're wrong.... You've got it backwards.... They used a flat plane in the M3 and went back to cross plane in the Z4.....

BMW uses the P66 flat plane engine in the DTM M3 now.

It's "completely new" apparently.

Yeah, you're completely backwards. Production cars use cross plane cranks. Race engines like P66 are flat plane.

Very doubtful Dinan will make their own flat plane crank. The amount of work is larger than one thinks. Cams are all different. Would likely need a standalone ECU because firing order is all different too. Standalone ECU is no big deal for Dinan, but the rest of the engineering is. This is a flat plan project underway in Japan. I have no idea who's funding it. But from what I'm told, more than a dozen cranks have been ordered.

I am impressed with the styling for sure. And 500 normally aspirated hp from the 5.0 V8 is going to be some serious bang for the buck.
