Sounds like they’re about to give you base M’s for comp prices. Now you’re getting the higher of today’s trim as the base but in reality you’re now getting the lower trim for what was the higher trim price, well, knowing BMW it’s maybe priced even higher because now you have to take all the comp fittings even if you don’t want it and there’s no lower alternative trim to fall back on.

Let’s be honest here, a vast majority in this forum get rid of the comp fittings for aftermarket anyway - wheels, suspension and engine/handling tuning.

Makes sense. I believe that was the case for the M8 starting from the 2nd year of production. You can only buy the Comp variant. The onyl difference now is that there is no Comp designation, which also makes sense. Keep it simple. M3 or M5 and so on is enough.

can we remove the m40i and m50i trims as well and call them 40is and 50is?

I wouldn't count manuals out just yet. Survey from a couple years ago said that the M2 had a 50% take rate for manuals, M3/M4 had 20%. That's still a healthy proportion of M cars going for manual transmissions.

For sake of comparison, Porsche 718/911s had a 40% manual take rate.

The decision to eliminate Competition option makes sense considering BMW AG seeks to lower costs. Every option incurs additional costs, from supply chain to sales & marketing.

I guess I'll just have to keep my 6MT 2022 M4 for quite a few years longer. Definitely NOT a bad thing. I love the Isle of Man Green with the Tartufo full leather interior and moonroof. At my age, I might kick the bucket before I'll need a new car.

The already skipped the Competition badge on the G87 M2. Just upped the hp in 2025 models.

Always thought it was a silly marketing excercise, especially on the SUVs. Where exactly is everyone 'competing' with these things?

Pretty rich coming from a company who throws M badges all over mid tier models and SUVs.

Agree, 100%.

BMW should consider bringing back the ‘is’ badge.

The number of comments claiming this statement inherently means the manual transmission is dead just proves how poorly the “competition” moniker was handled in the past.

Is the manual transmission dead for future models? No clue. This headline means nothing in regards to transmission choices.

The “competition” badge has meant so many different things depending on the model.

E46 - competition (ZCP) does not affect transmission choice.

E9X - competition (ZCP) does not affect transmission choice.

F80 & F82 - competition does not affect transmission choice.

F87 - competition does not affect transmission choice.

G87 - competition does not affect transmission choice. (Because comp is dead, this is the way future models will be)

The ONLY generation which relied on the competition badge to define transmission was the G80 & G82.

I made sure my son bought a manual transmission car for his first. I bought him a t-shirt that says ‘real cars don’t shift themselves’. I had to drive the car home for him, but he was driving it the next day.

Honestly, makes sense.

Competition isn’t special anymore, it’s become the standard G8X that everyone has.

Personally, if I wanted a manual car I’d opt for an older, more engaging sports car since that’s the whole point,E9X or older (BMW’s holy grail era) but that’s just my preference on the matter.

The only situation in which I would ever buy an automatic sports car is if it is for the track and I am trying to shave every split second off my time that I can. These cars are so powerful already ever since the f8x that even pushing them to 50% of their capability on the street will put you in jail. For me it’s all about the driving experience now. There is absolutely no substitute for hitting your local mountain twisties while rowing your own gears constantly trying to hit that perfect shift. I’m a millennial. For me my M4 is quite literally a weekend in the twisties vehicle only it only sees about 1500 miles a year, but even if it was my daily, I would still get a manual. Me personally it’s hard to understand a true car enthusiast not wanting that third pedal. If it’s still hard to understand, maybe this will help. People talk about how EVs are fast but have no souls. Us manual enthusiast feel the same about ICE sports cars without that third pedal. But instead of the engine noise argument, is the computer doing all the work for you argument. The engagement with a clutch pedal is unlike anything you can ever experience while driving, and there’s no such thing as being a perfect 10 manual driver, it’s a constant improvement activity, which makes it even more fun. I absolutely love doing the “ricer flybys” with that perfectly tuned exhaust. You know, blipping the throttle with the clutch engaged as your backing up or pulling into a spot. I love everything about it lol. Eventually I’ll have a GT3 (the only upgrade from a M4 in my opinion) and it’s going to be very difficult for me to decide if I go with PDK or a manual specifically because at that point, I will want to track it and I think I will start obsessing over lap times. Who knows, but if it’s for the street, it better be manual in my eyes.
