Well said! I took one for a drive at an M Town event and was blown away with how fast it was and how well it drove. Super quiet inside and the interior and exterior trim were top notch.

Unfortunately, there probably were just not enough buyers for the vehicle.

The XM is in a different class compared to X5M and X6M.
Why dont people go after the X7 as well being slower than X5 and X6 on identical drivetrains? Because it's a different class, they shouldnt be compared. Also BMW crippled the XMs ICE on purpose so X5/6M sales wouldn't drop. A fully spec'ed X6M is 20k$ less expensive than an fully spec'ed XM, as opposed to the big difference between a base X6M and base XM.People are too ignorant to observe the fact that the XM comes with every option apart from B&W as standard and they compere base X6M prices to base XM prices which is stupid.
Look at stage1 results on the XM, 850hp at the wheel. An X5M or X6M would never be able to go hp for hp with an XM because they lack the extra 200hp from the electric motor

600 mile road trip, it was a combination of highway, a bit of rural town driving and twisted mountain roads. The thing is, I got the same mpg as I would've gotten with my X6 40d (3L TT diesel). You need to manage the drivetrain, use oce on higbway, and electric in town, and hybrid down mountain to charge the battery

The highlighted features are apparently not the interest shared by majority BMW customers. And any modern American fully loaded truck can do everything you mentioned here without the glorified M aura at significantly less total cost. G class as well as Urus comes with status symbol that cannot be easily duplicated by XM in a few years.

The only thing a typical american truck can immitate is the size. Not the luxury, performance, handling, etc. The G and Urus are everywhere, everyone knows about them. And I guarantee an XM stands out more than an X6M

If BMW bring back 6 series and drop xm, I would say the decision makers are having a clear mind. They know how to make money.
The current 8 series is old, they need a big update. 4 series is sportier and more aggressive looking, 6 and 8 series are GTs, elegant and luxury. XM is a big mix up. The logic for XM is one car for everything. Well, M3 is also having this logic, this is not something faulty. But clearly, with the price of a xm, you can have a M2/3/4 + X5. Different car different usage. I do not think a person who can afford xm is hard to find another parking spot.

Kind of excited to see what 6 will bring to the table. S58 from m4, carbon core + double wishbone from 8 would be great.

If new car going to be hybrid I wonder what will happen with manual m4 resale values in a course of 20 years.

Thanks for clarifying. I thought you were initially saying that straight highway was as good as diesel. Yes, to get the most out of a hybrid you need to play to its strengths.

X5d on Fuelly are averaging 24-25mpg, they’d be more like 30 on the highway. My 535d sedan averages 33-35, and sees up to 40mpg on highway trips. The penalty for big heavy bodies is large.

BMW never should have renamed the 6 to the 8. That was just a stupid marketing gimmick.

Discontinuing any models using combustion engines is a recipe for disaster. The market isn't ready or isn't interested in switching any time soon. PHEV, sure. But fully battery I don't think the market is gonna support.

This is why you have to give BMW their due. I don’t think the XM was ever supposed to be a long-term staple in the line up, it was more of a textbook exercise that they could adapt when they needed. BMW vs. other OEM’s probably saw the EV segment in a downward trend and pull the trigger on cancelling the full EV version. Having the CLAR platform allowed BMW to do that while still being able to adapt to the changing EV market.

And people thought BMW made a mistake by not going all in with a dedicated EV platform.

The XM was a huge disaster in the M division history. It is so unbelievable that they honor the //M 50th anniversary with that garbage.
I'm afraid the upcoming M5 with that lake like weight would be the next big failure.

Every manufacturer is now shifting their future strategies away from electrification, But BMW has never learnt anything from Mercedes failure and keep relying on EVs!

most likely to have folks pay for the new m5 hybrid drivetrain testing in the real world. Small number of vehicles and very expensive. Has M designation. Drivetrain can be used in other M models. If there is catstrophic failure only a small number of vehicles is impacted.

Car & Driver tested the normal XM (not the Label), and it does 0-60 in 3.4 seconds.
Don't compare test numbers with official numbers.
