I have heard this alright. Do you need to take it easy on the engine (low revs etc) for the first 1200 miles or can you drive as you want but just ensure the oil gets changed

I'll let someone else speak for the 1200 mile break in - or not.

But as for the "drive as you want" - make sure you always warm up the car properly, even with the new engine:

- Let cold start cycle through, about 60-90 seconds. You'll know when the exhaust quiets down a bit.

- Immediately start driving the car as normal, but keep the revs under 3-4K RPMs until the car reaches operating temp

If you can verify the engine is remanufactured from BMW in Germany, sure go ahead. Just make sure it's not some junk from the garage down the street or from the junk yard

Its covered under warranty in a BMW dealership. I can verify when they are lowering the engine in but I am assured it is from BMW Germany.

The issue would still be there. But I wouldnt worry about it as you have 2 years of warranty in case anything happens. You could do aftermarket bearings at the end of the warranty. As others have mentioned, do the proper warm up and enjoy the car.

Loud knocking in the engine. Appeared after a hard acceleration from 1st through to 3rd. Not red-lined or in M mode. I stopped driving immediately for dealership review. They dropped the oil and seen metal filings.

This is not my car but mine had a very similar noise

So, yes, since you appear to be actually getting a new / remanufactured engine (lucky you - I'm amazed that they didn't total the car), you definitely need to observe the break in.

What makes you say that. The dealership is telling me its bench tested and does not need to break it in.

Was it bench tested for 1,200 miles? Seems unlikely. If it's actually a new engine, it has the same run in requirement as a new car.

(Also, the definition of "bench tested" is always an interesting one. Do you see any evidence that it was put on an engine dyno and run in in the first place?)

Why even take a chance? Breaking in the engine so it’s good for life is not a big deal. 1200 miles of careful = 100000 miles of bliss.

I'm certainly not a mechanic and was listening to the professionals. Seemed odd to me also but they were pretty insistent that its fine.
The warranty still has 2 years on it so I would be surprised if they wanted to put another engine in it.
But I will take it easy for a while anyway.

You should also get the oil changed at 1200 miles.

No matter what you do, the odds are that the engine will last two years.

Also, the mechanics would be happy to get paid to put another engine in.

Found out that my bottom end was replaced when my rod bearings are done. Couldn't be happier to find this out. This leaves the valvetrain which isn't ideal, but you're getting completely unworn piston rings and cylinder walls so you'll have compression just as good as when it left the factory, a total win.

here are the factory break-in procedures pulled from the supplementary manual that was luckily right by my desk:

1200 miles - do not exceed 5,500 rpm or 105 mph. Do not [floor it].

1200 to 3000 - no rpm indicated, do not exceed 135mph. Use maximum acceleration for only brief moments, e.g. when passing.

Do not use Launch Control.

Hah, that's very conservative. When I got a new motor, I drove it very cautiously for ~800 miles, then drove conservatively up to ~1,200 miles not redlining it, but applying heavier throttle such as 3/4 throttle.

When I got to ~1,500 miles the engine got its first track day. Have done 11 days on it since.

Make sure they flush the oil lines in the coolers. A friend of mine blew his new motor after BMW replaced it because they forgot to flush the oil lines out and had debris from the old engine's bearing. Then he got another motor in replacement.
