I run an external mic zip tied above my rear diffuser. Since I use two gopros I also use some in cabin sound to pick up some of the intake sound. The in cab view is from a GoPro4 on a tackform solutions roll cage mount and the external view is a GoPro 7 Black on a tackform suction mount. They make very nice products

With the tackform you will need about 1.5” of straight round bar close to the diameter of the headrest posts to clamp to. I’m going to a half cage too in the next couple of weeks and going fab up a collar that incorporates the round bar - should have a lot of versatility with it. Going to try this for shits & giggles and also before spending more money an another mount.

Yes running synced audio from both cameras. The audio quality on the Hero 7 Black with no external miv is very good compared to the older GoPros. Thats why I have the external mic on the older GoPro 4

Well....
I returned the Trackform arm and kept the Manfrotto

The Trackform is very good solution but I could not find a way to secure it to my satisfaction.

I wish I knew all these options exist before I invested in all the GoPro mounting hardware to try to find a good mounting combination.

External Microphone. I ordered the Rode smartLav+ Lavalier but it was dead on arrival. Amazon is shipping a new one.

Second Rode Microphone arrived and is not working with the GoPro.

I have a Sony stereo mic that works.
but it produce excessive background noise.

One thing I did not try is setting the GoPro from "Stereo Only" to "Wind Only".

Perhaps with the Wind filter it would work better.

When the second Rode microphone did not work with the GoPro, I was not satisfied, I sensed that there is more to the story.

It turns out that the Rode is a TRRS microphone with four sections on the male plug, and normal Stereo is TRS with three sections.

So you need a "Rode SC3 3.5mm TRRS to TRS Adaptor."

When I contacted Amazon the first time it did not work, rather than tell me to get adapter, they issue credit and sent me another one.

Not wanted to leave a stone unturned. And wanted to use Amazon gift they issue, I ordered the Rode microphone for the third time, this time with the adapter.

There is always something to learn. Who knew about TRS and TRRS? Not me.

It is coming today and I expect it to work. I still wonder if it is any good. But that belongs to another post.
.
**** EDIT *******
Confirmed. The adapter makes the Rode mic works.
