Dr. Dre, BMW is worse than Porsche. After I complained about oil consumption to the BMW dealer I was given a printout that says bmw oil consumption spec for motorsport 'S' engines is 2.5 liters per 1,000 miles which is 1.64 quarts at 622 miles. Or if you prefer 380 miles / 1 quart. That's almost like having to buy a quart of oil everytime you fill up the tank. I also have the 2008 TIS BMW manual for this engine and they have bumped up the number (more oil consumption) to evade responsibility. The printout i received says 'update'.

They are trying to get away with not replacing or repairing engines. These 'cover my ass' specs are simply an attempt to thwart warranty claims. |

A different brand CAL has lead to a court ordering the manufacturer to extend engine warranty to 150k mile, 10 years and repair costs for those already affected which was accepted by the manufacturer. It's only a matter of time before there is a CAL against bmw. |

update :
After dealer added 1 quart oil level level was back a max one month ago. Then over a period of a month I did 400 miles of ALL only highway drives. after 150 miles level dropped from max to max-1/4 , after 250 miles level dropped to 1/2. after 450 miles level was still at 1/2. I then decided to drive it locally, so i drove the car on 4 local errands and at the end of the day, oil level reads : full !! wtf. Notice that the oil sensor was replaced and is new. Based on the last oil purge at the dealer i do know that ~1 quart oil was missing so it is not a sensor problem. |

I would see similar, but not quite as dramatic differences on extended highway drives, going from full to one bar above min on 2 hour or greater drives. Recently I had to replace my crank case ventilator valves (connect valve covers to the intake plenum). The variation after extended highway drives seemed to have diminished some. Not sure how they would influence the issue though.

my car was doing the same thing. I just completed an oil change myself, and put exactly 8.8 quarts in. It is not leaking underneath
The oil level read full (top dash) for a few minutes, but for the next few days it was reading OK (bottom dash on the oil level meter). I knew the right amount of oil was in there so I didn't do anything. Few days later and voila, measure on nice flat ground and it's staying at top mark full. |

Somewhat related - I had an issue with my 2012 E93 M3 where it was reporting the oil was above max level, as if there was too much oil and there was a problem. The car was still on its factory-shipped I-step version.. I upgraded to the latest I-step and the issue went away - the car now reads its correct oil level and all is well.

Rajmun340 I experience the same problem with my 2011 BMW M3 coupe, replace the oil level sensor, same problem. What I do is add 1/2 quart of 10W 60 oil drive 45 minutes if the level didn't change I will then reset the oil change meter. I will take a picture of the miles before I reset the meter to know when I need the next oil change.
Exactly why we need a dipstick for the s65! |

Sounds plausible, but then I could see the oil readings being totally off if your tech pours in too much (or vice versa) on the initial fill. |

1. I am the original owner, took delivery of this car at the Welt in Munich in the summer of 2013. 2. oil consumption has been like this since factory delivery. Initially the BMW dealer told me oil consumption will reduce after break-in. It didn't. I wanted to believe him because it was my brand new car. I have numerous dealer invoices showing i complained about oil consumption over the years. They've evaded the issue everytime claiming it meets BMW tolerance on oil consumption. They eventually printed out a sheet that gave bmw oil consumption spec for motorsport 'S' engines (S65, S85) : 2.5 liters per 1,000 miles which is = 380 miles / 1 quart of oil. |

Mine turned out to be the leaking oil cap. Doesn't use oil at all since changing to E46 M3 one.

Hi Nik, it made sense to keep it for now, because of depreciation on factory new price and since I am the original owner. It will get harder to find such low mileage cars over time for buyers and they don't make them high revving V8 anymore.
