TTony How long ago did you buy yours? What year?
Doug Demuro ruined the biggest secret to buying a used ///M car or AMG. It's true. I would go for the 100k, but this car already had 56k. I passed on this, wasn't feeling the vibe and will wait from now till the end of the year to find another. |

Given, I totally understand OP's feelings as I used to replay this every night after meeting a stranger E60 M5 on a highway few years ago:
Even considered sticking a third pedal and a shifter into the SMG as it is mechanically identical to that of a manual transmission, making it 7MT. I loved the gear ratio of the SMG - test driving a Hamann tuned E63 M6 (with Kreissieg F1 exhaust). If I have to own one car for the rest of my life, S85 powered vehicle is on the top of my list.

Not even getting out of an F90 M5 and driving the V10 is able to mitigate its allure. It is just absolutely incredible. Two friends have them in 6MTs and I have first dibs. Even if it means moving to 6 cars I'll do whatever it takes to buy one. By the way -- please buy a +2008. You can't buy a earlier version |

Standing track-side as a friend's E63 M6 was accelerating in 2nd from a slow corner, passing by just at the 2-3 upshift, and then on down the straight was an amazing experience. The car had a full Meisterschaft exhaust which is incredibly loud, and the tonal quality of the S85 wail rising into a frenzied scream was sensational. When you hear the car with the Meisterschaft exhaust coming prior to seeing it, it's a shock to find out it's a BMW, especially if it's an M5. There's no doubt these will be sought after cars as time goes by, and fewer and fewer are left...especially low mileage garage queen examples. Those are already appreciating since bottoming 2-3 years back.

SMG transmission in M5/6 is a 7 speed ,much better than 6 speed SMG in M3,shifts are fast and crisp if gas pedal is floored. If you drive like grandma SMG transmission will shift like drunk grandpa.

Having done multiple pulls to ... very high speeds, I assure you the ratios work just fine on the E60 M5.

I’ve been having that itch again to pick up a weekend toy and a S85 is at the top of my list. If you were to pick something strictly for summer use that may see 3000 miles a year, that’s being generous, would you go with an M5/M6 or a M3? I’ve had two M3s already but something about the noise of that V10.....

At that point its personal preference. Apples vs. oranges M6 with a race exhaust wins in the excitement department. But it is larger and more of a GT. M3 V8 intake can sound good, more nimble, more aggressive / sport looking. More fun to drive fast in the twisties. I would take the M6 for the sound and power. I've had both. Absolute beast of an engine. SMG is fine, just need to learn how to drive it (manual mode 100% of the time).

Here's one that popped up, that I was going to check out: https://www.carmax.com/car/17137137 2009 (uses the CCC iDrive system) $32,000 36,000 Miles Warranty for 5 Years, up to 100K miles will be about $4K Total will be ~$36K It's in Chicago now. I did notice the steering wheel is cracked though. You can see it in the pictures (left side of steering wheel) |

I haven't read all of the comments but I'm sure others have expressed just how problematic the SMG and Vanos system on the S85 can be. Just don't expect it to be as reliable as your M3.
