Wooo hooo! It's great to see that other people want the idrive 4.0 interface. What is astounding to me is how damn ugly idrive 3.0 is. The radio info with just two line of basic font is borderline retarded. I mean, this system was used up until 2008. The interface of the playstation 1 released in 1996 is nicer. Pathetic.
How low do you see the price of this dropping with used components? |

MY08 M3 iDrive: CCC based MY09+ M3 iDrive: CIC based ASK and M-ASK systems were used in the 5/6/7 series and will not apply in this discussion. As per your question - I don't see prices dropping anytime soon.

The cheapest that I found is:
- higher definition screen: $1000 + $500 core charge - CIC: $600 + $500 core charge - controller: $184 - 2009 console trim: $360 full MSRP price, I'm guessing $270 with discounts as that's the price of the 2008's (not available to order yet; don't ask me why as nobody outside BMWNA knows) - screen cable: I can't get the P/N as the dealers that I asked cannot find it in the ETKA. |

best bet is to find someone who has an 08 and wants to add idrive
so you sell everything you take out to him and pay the difference to get the 09 components i am sure you can find some people who would want to add idrive |

What's the core charge?
How much could I get for my iDrive components? Can I sell them to a parts dealer? Do they pay pennies for parts? If the difference is about $2K and this CAN be done, I'm doing it. Also, if the car is a lease and I return it with iDrive 4.0 will they charge me for altering the car? |

iDrive 3.0 owners. Watch these videos and HOW MUCH BETTER 4.0 is. You will be enraged. It's freaking ridiculous how bad the 3.0 iDrive is:
Russian, HD, shows details better (hit the HD button) : English, shows functionality better |

Let's also not forget the differance in Sat Radio units pre 3/08 and post 3/08. I have been waiting for an answer as to how to get "best of XM" in my 02/08 build M3 for 6 months now. Still no answer on that one.
If you do this to your leased car you better get approval, in writing, from your dealership. When I asked my dealer about doing this about 4 months ago when they started showing up, they basically just chuckled and said that they could do it, but by the time Labor is factored into the price it would be cheaper to trade in my car for an 09. Having used both systems (girlfriend has an 09 335xi), I can attest to the CiC system being a little better, but not nearly worth the expense of ripping out the CCC system to put in a CiC setup. Yes, the screen has noticeably higher resolution, but it is used for a god damn map, not to play Call of Duty, so who cares (if you want to mod your idrive to play DVDs, have at it). The ability to scroll by letters has been improved, and the system feels faster when searching through my ipod, but again, not fast enough to warrant the swap. The shortcut keys are nice, but you already have shortcuts simply by holding the joystick in a particular direction. In fact, I find that to hit the shortcut keys I first look at their locations to make sure I am hitting the correct one (granted, this is still new. I imagine like everything else you get used to the button placement), but I doubt it will ever be as intuitive as simply moving the stick to the Right for Navi, down for Music, etc. The UI is still slightly "off" in terms of menu navigation. It really comes down to me being annoyed that 6 months after I take delivery of my car, they decide to change the system. It wasn't like they didn't know the new system was coming out. They should have just rolled it out sooner, or charged less for the older system. Just my 2 cents.

To each his own. I'm young. I like technology. I hate shitty technology (iDrive 3.0). I like less shitty technology (iDrive 4.0) What would be the reasoning for charging me for returning a car with BETTER BMW components than I bought it with? Can you not imagine the used car ad? THIS 2008 has the NEW 2009 iDrive system!!!!! |

AGREED! I would gladly drive down to Tom@EAS if they figured this out for a decent price.

i stopped by BMW Concord and tried the new iDrive. It's a lot simpler and more intuitive. I like how fast everything runs and the look is so much more clean due to the HD resolution of the new screen. Enjoyed having the option to go full NAV Screen with no Assist Window.

I just dropped off the m for the DCT recall reprogram. While I was there I asked if they were able to upgrade 08 m3's idrive to the 09 m3's idrive system. After my service rep, Kimberley, got off the phone with the tech, she told me they could but for a huge amount of cash (more than I expected and I expected it to be a pretty costly job)...

I don't have this in writing yet, but I'm having my service rep get a quote for me (full breakdown). She said the service technician said around $11,000. Will post the quote in a few when I get my car back.

That's nuts. Half of the service technicians around me are idiots so I wouldn't even believe them. Im sure we can find somethig cheaper than that. I am curious to see his quote though, if it's that much ill keep the 08' navi.
