The problem with narrower tires is that they take away from the dry traction and handling that helps us enjoy the M3. I did not want to compromise the car that much so I went to a "sort of minus one" on sizing the snows at 255/235 and chose V rated snows with stiffer sidewalls. I agree that if it is your only car and you have to drive it in heavy snow, then you have no choice but to go as hardcore as possible on the snow tires and forget about having fun on dry roads. I have been there and done that a number of times and am happy that I have other cars to drive if necessary.

I have the pirelli sotto zero seris II winter tires on 18's and they suck ass in the snow!

I think you need to replace that certain family member asap. My family loves my M3, in fact my grandmother prefers riding in my car when we all go out for family time because she says it looks good and the seats are comfy compared to everyone else's cars.

My M3 with snow tires is as predictable as my X5 in the snow.
