Their goal is to prevent accidents. The GM fiasco was as simple as the engine turning off and throwing a rod through the block usually accomplishes that.

As for VANOS, it's the hub that can potentially fail. It has 2 tabs that spins, and those can shear. If you are lucky it "just" falls in the oil pan (which would still mean you have to drop the oil pan), or if you are unlucky it'll get caught in the timing chain and you'll have a nice big hole in your engine. I recommend browing on m3forum.net. There's a ton of info there, including DIY's. I'd rather not say too many things in case they are potentially wrong. But that is one of the reasons I skipped the E46 right there. Do you see how good we have it compared to them?

My solution to the potential blowing-up S65 is my USAA warranty on the car. They cover basically everything and it only cost me about $2500 for 2 years. That way if/when something major goes long like an engine failure or transmission failure, I don't owe a dime. The $2500 is worth the peace of mind.

As for the VANOS, the critical parts are the pump disc, solenoid and sealing plate from Raj@Beisansystems. Re-installing the cam gear bolts with loctite as well while you're in there. The rattle kit is optional. Tools needed are the TDC pin, and cam-bridge. The procedural DIYs at www.beisansystems.com are excellent. Hope this helps.

or, pitch it as an investment opportunity. For example, someone willing to front 50%,25%, etc of the costs. By investing you'd give them rights to the design so they can re-order more at a lower cost. I'm interested either way, maybe we should take this to PM.

I do wonder why owners just don't take out a warranty...it costs me ~$1000 US a year which admittedly is no small amount of money but it seems worth it for peace of mind.

If you do still want to do the plates, epoxying is structurally superior to welding, easier, and doesn't predispose the car to rust. The other potential weak area of the car is indeed the vanos-- can be permanently locked down for ~$350 in parts (beisan) in an afternoon. After that, no real issues to worry about. |

O/T: S55 engine details.
Pages 27-29 of the S55 show some of the "new" rod bearing materials, etc. used for this engine.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Just wondering if we are going to start a thread with a poll taking count of those who have blown motors? I would think this would have happened already. Stupid idea?

What company? Most warranties i've seen in Canada have a claim limit and deductible. I hate warranties, they always try to find watever reason to deny a claim.

I paid 2200 for My warranty. Covers most mechanical, but doesn't cover any electronics like entertainment units, nav, Modules/parts related to DSC/ABS/TPMS.
That was 2 years/24K miles. So far LKQ Engine, Power steering pump, washer reservoir/pump, random suspension bushings/arms and Brand new OEM transmission. It's going to expire in 6 months, but I'll be re-upping for another 2 years. But will scale back to powertrain only. |
