I don't think I'd want to come out to my car on jack stands after staying in Rosamond for the night.

Got my new helmet. It's a $200 Racequip but it's one of the few that fit my head nicely. Couldn't find an FIA approved helmet that didn't rape my ears taking it on and off. The padding is nice and the helmet seems to be on par in quality with most others. No bells and whistles which may explain the price. Only complaint is the soft aluminum screw which holds the visor on is way too soft. The head strips too easily.
I need to start driving with the shield down and sick of sticking sunglasses in the padding. So I got a blue iridium shield which should work good on bright and cloudy days. Going to use tear offs to prevent scratching and to get the legit racer look.

have you tried a bell sport? they are on the cheaper side. i tried on 3-4 helmets in the same price range and it was by far the most comfortable. some dude i shared a garage with at a track day once told me he used to use expensive helmets, but after trying on a bell sport, he switched and loved it.
i haven't tried a tinted visor yet. i'm afraid i'll spend the $80 and not like it. i don't like to wear sunglasses (things on my face bug me) and i'm kinda tall, so the sun doesn't really get in my eyes while i'm in a car..

I'm putting a best laps video together and will include the spin in the video. I may have mentioned this to you already but ended up with a new PR in the last session, beating my time with the MCS suspension installed. Anxious to get it back on now as I know I could do better. I think I heard you say you hit a PR that session as well, congrats!

Ordered StopTech ST60/40 kits over the weekend, planning to swap them in probably after one more track day on the stock setup.
Hope you all don't mind me rehashing, and I know this has been discussed a lot around the internet, but I'm curious to see what your current/recent opinions are on fluid and pads. Castrol SRF still seems like the easy option. It's about double the price of RBF600 (per volume) but if I can get away with one less flush, the extra cost is more than made up. Endless RF650 is supposed to be even better than SRF but I feel like SRF is more than enough for me already? Any other options I should be considering? As for pads, I know there are a ton of different preferences. I've never used 'race' or 'track' pads, but let's say I want to try something more aggressive -- what would you recommend to someone wanting to make that step? Any advice is appreciated! I had a few problems with the stock brakes last year which I could probably resolve with better fluid and pads, but I have the opportunity to swap to StopTech BBK and I don't think I'll regret it. Planning to fit in more track days going forward too. |

since i upgraded to a bbk, i have been running srf. for pads, i have tracked with ferodo ds2500's and ferodo dsUNO pads. the 2500's are a hybrid street/race, and the UNO's are a race pad. i run 2500's on the street front and rear. they are quiet and good-mannered up front, but a little noisy in the rear (rear is oem rotors). recently, i started using pfc08's in the rear and they are very noisy. the UNO's feel good on the track and have a lot more bite than the 2500's. i had to swap from using UNO's to 2500's mid-day at laguna seca (really hard on brakes) after my pads were down to the backing plates. it was a noticeable difference in the bite and sharpness of brake application. hard to describe, but it felt even more precise and predictable. i have some DS1.11's in the mail. they are a race pad, but are supposed to last a little longer than the UNO's with the compromise being a little less bite. they are a little cheaper, but not much. i'll have to see if it is a worthwhile compromise for my specific application and i was planning on sharing my findings.

Here's something to keep in mind. I've found that different pad compounds have different heat transfer characteristics and more obviously as pads get thinner they transfer heat to the caliper faster. Having boiled fluid in two different cars now with both Endless and Motul fluids I exclusively run SRF now. Small price to pay for the added safety margin IMO.

The only thing SRF buys you is that it will still be OK if you boil it. Otherwise, Motul lasts just as long. On my E46 M3 with a ST BBK and ducts, I run BMW OE brake fluid.
I'd buy 2 cans of Stoptech STR-600 (same thing as Motul RBF600 except cheaper) and a motive brake bleeder. The motive unit will allow you to bleed at the track if needed. Skip the SRF.

LOL, in Jae I trust and reasonable minds will differ on this!
My opinion is heavily biased on my soft pedal experiences fwiw. And also I probably could make Motul work now that I manage the brake pedal better but again prefer the extra margin.

i've always kinda wondered if more heat goes into the calipers as the pads wear down. sure, the pad's thermal capacity decreases as there is less pad material to soak it up, but with the pistons pushed almost all the way out, there is a ton more ventilation between the pads and the calipers. even more so for people with vented pistons.
just for the sake of discussion, i asked essex how they felt about titanium shims and they said the addition of titanium shims would make a nominal difference, or no difference at all. heat transfer from pads to the calipers aren't really an issue with their kits.

if you're actually boiling other "race" fluids, just spend the extra money for a higher capacity fluid. for as often as you have to spend the money, its a no-brainer. unless you're fine tuning for compressability of a fluid with a bbk that won't fade or transfer the heat, why they hell would you tolerate a lower temp fluid?
