I have a 08 e92 m3 with 49K miles and I just had codes thrown at me "Engine malfunction" "Increased emissions" "DSC inactive" I left my car at my mechanic and he is saying that the DME is not communicating with the throttle body. After reading this thread I'm thinking its the throttle actuator. Has anyone experienced this problem?

People say that if 1 fail, the other one is right behind it, but mine failed at 57k and now at 81k with no issues. Good luck! Try to see if the dealership will work with you.

W///: Thank you for posting this! Dealer quoted almost $3k to replace one actuator. With the help of this post and a few hours of work I got it done and saved $2,000!
Some additional tips for people doing this in the future: 1. The arm between the throttle actuator and the throttle rail just pops off with some careful force from a screw driver. 2. be VERY careful with the wire clips. On my 5 year old car they were very brittle. I broke at least 3 of them by accident. Nothing a few zip ties couldn't fix, but still annoying. 3. Labeling the wire connectors is a good idea. I didn't do this, and then found out the hard way that the connectors aren't unique (it is possible to plug the wrong wires together). |

It's possible I guess, but I'm very surprised BOTH just went bad. Does he have the code to show you that both are bad?

Thank goodness for this DYI and folks who've crafted replacement gears. I am going to try replacing the gears to see how that goes. Believe it or not I am stuck at simply disconnecting some connectors. I've been working with bad lighting at night and have managed to get most of the connectors apart.
I don't want to break any wires or clips so I annoyed the pic and added arrows to the clips I am concerned with. Where should I press and which direction I should pull? Got it. The round end is just a cap to cover the wires. Just pull or pry with a screw driver. It will pop off. I think I have a better sense for how unfamiliar connectors come apart as well as what might be an end cover for wires (like an elbow cap). Anyway i got bank one out. Tried a new actuator... now I have one error (P161F). I will open it again and perhaps swap the circuit boards between the two faulty ones to see if the error code changes (doing that to see if the circuit board is a factor). In short, the brainer fix is to purchase a new actuator. |

Hey Guys,
Same problem on my car I suppose. Problem started this summer with only 67.000 km on it. On my car it is usually resettable and used to occur less than once a month, but nowadays it's more like once every other week. Mine is a 2009 M-DCT by the way and when the car is in "limp mode" it shifts quite rough and at maximum speed, I get overtaken by trucks and granny's. Time to visit the dealership next week, since I'm not the DIY-type-of-guy, not on my car at least. I am very curious if BMW Netherlands is willing to compensate, because in my humble opinion, this is unacceptable for a premium product with this milage, also given the fact that it seems to be a known problem. Any Dutch M3 owners on this forum who have similar experience on this matter? Keep you posted. |

Codes: 002B21 - Throttle actuator control circuit bank 1 / predriver check throttle valve actuator 002B22 - Throttle actuator control circuit bank 2 review/misfire detection error summation/predriver check throttle valve actuator 002B57 - Mass air flow sensor 002B2D - Throttle initialization bank 2/ High-pressure fuel 2 I bought a new actuator but it looks like I need another. I also have the DSC, increased emission, start assistance inactive errors

I'm in the process of replacing one of the actuator.
Update...... When doing the pre-ignition. Throttle bank #2 clicks and moves but the #1 actuator does not so....I'm thinking #1 is bad.
