I did not change bearings for a worn or failed reason. Did them just because I was there. I have not experienced that start up noise that some have had. Mike Benvo(BPM) I believe has heard this and was trying to get it sorted. Maybe PM him. My car makes so much noise on cold start I would not hear much

That does sound valve train related and coincides with rpm drop I see. Your garage emphasizes that noise no doubt. It is a special procedure to set the timing chain on the S65 to eliminate all possible slack. I could see this varying car to car.

The dealer replaced my vanos check valves and the noise got slightly louder. I think it's normal for a car sitting that long. |

Mine was as loud as that ...if the car has been left parked for too long .... may be a week and when you start it, you hear it. Dealer checked it out and raised a PUMA and BMW said it is normal for age and mileage of the car. It's the oil pressure dropping inside the vanos and check valve related. Nothing to worry. But one thing ... since I got Mike's tune, I haven't experienced it. I think Mike's tune does make some changes to the vanos parameters and may be it has taken care of it. It's definitely check valve related inside the vanos. It's perfectly normal according to BMW. I also saw you had 24 miles in the range. I had the same and had the car parked for a couple of days and when I started, BOOM, I got engine malfunction and all sorts of error codes. The fuel tank had expanded and excessive air was forced in thru the fuel lines. Filled up the tank, cleared the errors and has been good since. So be careful with leaving the car empty if you're going to store the car, Ask Mr Benvo.

Now to update the story I mentioned before about my friend with the 2011 M3 - the car is at the dealership getting the motor dismantled. We're pretty sure that it's the con rod bearings based on the sound. I asked him to take pictures once it's fully disassembled and will post them once they are sent to me. |

BlackStone Results Running Mobil One Race 0w50
Just got my results back from Blackstone.
This sample was after the oil was changed with new coated VAC bearings, ARP bolts, upgraded supercharger install, over 20+ dyno runs to track down a boost leak, and 1.5k miles. Quote:

The 0w50 is a fantastic oil. The reason I dont bring it up is you need to be catless and be prepared to replace o2 sensors much quicker than normal. Although for most if the car has a supercharger on it they are not worried about a couple hundred bucks for sensors.

Thanks Kawasaki00...
I'm running 100 cell HFCs...I'll see how the O2 sensors hold up. I'll post my next sample with Blackstone on my next oil change. Quote:

Because the 0w-50 that he is talking about is a racing only oil. It has over twice the zinc around 1850ppm I believe. That much zinc will burn coverters up and leave deposits on o2 sensors that skew the data. Kind of like running leaded fuel, but it just doesnt happen as fast.
