um it'll really depend on your car, condition, mileage etc.
I sold my 335i to carmax and they came in 4K under what I owed and my car was immaculate, low mileage, decent options. That might sound bad but i took it a couple of bmw dealerships and their quotes were a lot worse....considering the money I was saving on the deall i was getting on my used m3 and the fact i had to get rid of my 335i quick, I said screw it and went for it. i will say this - it's pretty quick to get a quote so there's no harm in taking 40 mins out of your day and getting it done. |

I sold my 07 e92 335i to them in June for $24k they then listed it for $28,900. So if they want a 20% margin I think that may give you an idea what to expect. They had the offer for me within 20 minutes and it was valid for 7 days.

Carmax is worthless and usually for desperate sellers or people who just have no clue or lazy to put in a little elbow grease....i went there to get two different vehicles appraised and they came in waaaay under what i wanted....i ended up selling BOTH cars on craigslist for double what carmax offered me....theives

I called Carmax to see about getting a quote a few years ago. The person on the phone told me to come on by and be sure not to have any weapons in the vehicle including bats in the trunk. I said ok, but if you feel you have to say such things, then we probably don't need to be doing business together. I guess that speaks to what kind of clients they see. I never bothered to get a quote.

In my experience, they offer more than dealers but less than you can get selling it yourself. Some people may think thats thievery but it can also be a real pita trying to sell your car and get what you think it's worth. I've sold two cars to them, referred a friend and he agreed they offered more than dealers but not what he wanted.

Try Autotrader
Autotrader now has a service similar to carmax. They'll give you an offer ONLINE car unseen and in my case it was higher than carmax by $1500.

I sold 3 cars to CarMax in the last 4 years. It's very convenient and saves you from a bunch of hassles. Sure, you will be selling your car at a discount as compared to what you can get privately, but you don't have to deal with tire kickers, scammers, low-ballers, etc. The rule of thumb is about 20% off the retail price at CarMax. So, find a similar car on the CarMax website and subtract 20%, and your offer price should in the rough ballpark. |
