M3 Killer?? Lexus 2008 IS-F and LF-A
Lexus wanted to make this factory-modified IS a real M3 killer, so rather than tweak and tune the IS's 300 horse V6, the Japanese luxury brand decided to shoehorn a high-revving V8 under the hood. No exact numbers have been given, but Lexus is claiming that this 5.0-liter eight-cylinder will have more than 400 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. An engine like this generates a lot of heat, so Lexus engineers slapped on an external oil cooler to keep this engine from cooking itself.

I doubt the IS-F will eat into M3's market share. Any serious M3 buyers will not opt for an automatic or trade driving experience for reliability. Those who are already in that camp will stay in that camp. Would be nice if BMW can focus more on reliability though; if Porsche can do it I don't see why BMW can't. The IF-A looks pretty hot though and I can see why someone would buy that over the M3 for exclusivity.

As far as Lexus is concerned, what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. It's the competition that makes the cars we prefer even better. Who knows? Maybe someday the M3 will have a V8 with forced induction.

I would never consider purchasing one over an M3, but I always think competition is a good thing. I'm not sure why they would ever offer a so-called performance car without an optional manual transmission, and the styling is way over the top for my tastes. The tailpipes look like a photoshop gone wrong, and that side scoop looks very odd.

Wasn't the IS350 supposed to be the 3 series killer- I wonder what happened?
Last I checked, the 3 series is healthy and getting even stronger. The IS-F will be an M3 killer as the IS350 was a 3 series killer. Lexus can huff and puff all they want, but the fact of the matter is delivering a high performance vehicle is different from mass producing vehicles, and it is different from bolting a 5.0 litre V8 on a chasis. It takes series of iterations to get it right, and the first iteration won't do it. |

I think the IS350 is a beatiful car. In many ways it looks better than the E90 sedan. However, this new IS-F looks like a complete mutilation of the original design. No way in hell I would buy that car over the M3. And I don't even know what the official M3 looks like. I will bet it won't look like the comletely over the top look of the IS-F.

They also state that 0-60 will be about 4.9 sec. That does not exactly kill an M3, not even the E46. With 4 doors I can also imagine it simply weighing more. Performance wise it does not eat an M3, and let's not even start about the looks...

I am a German car lover, always been stuck between Audi and BMW.
It's going to be a long time before the Japanese cars will get the level of engineering that the Germans do. Want style, go Italian. Want to be a streetracer with years of mods to instal, go Japanese. To each their own. But it is still a big step up from US cars. Never understood why someone would spend 70K+ on a 2007 Z06, that has the same interieur as a cavalier (in 1990)

To answer your question, it's simple, the Z06 provides 911TT performance at basically half the price, all while maintiang a modicum of luxury features (key less start/entry, navigation, heated seats, power everything). Many of them wonder why anyone would spend 70k more to get a nicer interior. It's all about perspective. The Corvette is an awesome car, it's not without it's cons, but the the M3/RS4 have cons as well, just different ones. Some people are willing to live with some, some are willing to live with others. -Adam |
