Need 2nd opinion, mechanics telling me I might need a new transmission..02' M3

Hello, need a second opinion from anyone that can help. I have a 2002 M3 non SMG. It has about 81k miles and has had normal service done. I thought my clutch went out but the mechanic is diagnosing that I may need a new transmission. He is still going to open everything up before he tells me for sure but he is basing this on a few things. First, car is in neutral, turn car on, release clutch & car appears to be in gear as it moves but then dies when clutch is completely released. Second, I treated it as if it was in gear, began to release clutch and give it car. It moved slightly and died. Third, I tried the other gears and all do the same thing. It's as if I dont have a neutral anymore but cant get the car to move. Does anyone think that by some miracle its just the clutch?

Thanks,,

I honestly don't know. I'm hoping he does since he works on BMW's. However, my M has the manual transmission, not the SMG.

You might want to try out the e46 m3 section or m3forum.net. YOu will get more ppl with 01-06 SMG experience there.

Oh my bad I misread your post. If you have a 6MT and are having problems like that it's not a good sign, unfortunately.
