Quoted 8-9 Hrs for Spring Install!
So I followed the "Official Recommended Install Shop" and called up a bunch of shops, and most of them quoted me 8-9hrs for the spring install! They are all saying that it's from the handbook... WTF! Members here all said 2-4hrs max!

Should not take more than 4-5 hours at all w/ alignment. If it does, they probably putting a trainee to do the job or something.

Definitely crazy. 503 Motoring did my H&R springs, changed my wheels (took some off of my other car and put them on the M3, and put the wheels from the M3 on my other M3), detailed my car, put on my clear-bra, painted my muffler black, redid part of my tint, and put vinyls on, ALL in one day! 8-9 hours is ridiculous!

It does not take 8 hrs. to install springs. I might take 3-4 hrs. for an amateur DIYer. All you need are your basic hand tools, a jack, and/or jackstands, and a spring compressor. Do the DIY. You learn more about your car, save some money, and have greater satisfaction at the end of the install.

Realistically it WILL take at least 5 hours or more for DIY for one person doing it (or even with another helping). If you think about it, thats an average of about 75 mins each for 1 side which is not a lot. The fronts takes up the most time, and you have to very careful with all the sensors, brakelines, etc. Also it takes time to decompress the original springs and compress them again.

Yes for sure..I can do the fronts now about 45 mins each, and the rears takes just about 30 mins each as its quite simple once you take the bolts out and lower the arms to get the old srpings out.

I just called a local shop and was quoted for 2 hours including alignment.
ANyway, how much do you guys think is a good rate for installing just the Springs? I got quoted around $330 for installing and alignment which is cheaper compare to some other places. Please let me know, I dont wanna get ripped off. |

even $330 seems like a rip-off. I cant believe shops are charging so much to install lowering springs. Maybe because its a bmw? I know its not a m3 but i've had springs installed on honda s2000's, civics, acura rsx for $100-$150 at very reputable shops, they took about 2hours to install

I installed my own springs in 6 hrs w/o any airtools, so with the proper equipment one can easily do it in 3-4 hrs.
The reason why shops are quoting so many hrs is because most of them have never done this before, and by law (at least in NY), shops cannot charge more than their estimate unless they get permission, so I think they just want to play it safe. I am moving to Houston in a month, so I'd be happy to assist anyone in the area |
