Shuddering at highway speeds
Hi everyone,
tldr; my car shakes 65mph and up, and I don't think it is an alignment or balancing issue, pls help. I have a '13 E92 comp stickshift. I bought it over the summer with 59k miles. I noticed fairly quickly a shuddering at highway speeds (65mph+, worst around 80mph). I took the car to the shop and turned out front wheels were bent, so I had them un-bent. Shuddering improved (obviously), but didn't go away. Then I had it aligned. Slight improvement, but still shuddered. Then I had it aligned and balanced, no improvement. Currently, I feel the shaking through the steering wheel and through the seat. Car is riding on fairly new continentals (shitty but its what it came with). The car sits for extended periods of time so I've considered that it could be flatspotting, but the issue doesn't go away after spending a day driving. Shake is agnostic to power input - so not a powertrain issue. Bushings? Bearings? What might be the situation, and how expensive is this sort of thing to fix? I am in the SF area btw. Thanks! |

Could be that the tires are damaged as well. If the wheels were bent, I'm assuming some of the control arms are damaged as well. Take it to a good indy shop for thorough inspection.

"un-bent" wheels are usually not going to be perfectly round and straight. Did you have the tires roadforce balanced and spin balanced when the wheels were straightened? Did you get wheel runout numbers to determine how good or bad they are after the straightening?
Also, in my experience many tire shops have top end balancing equipment but they use it to save money on weights and use a setting that lets them only balance the wheel until it's "good enough" but on a car like an M3 with a more direct connection between the wheels and chassis than your average Camry, you'll feel every little bit of imbalance. A performance shop with its own balancer that knows how to use it can get you a more precise balance if that's your problem. I have seen hundreds of wheels that were "just balanced three times by Discount Tire" that were 0.5 or 0.75 ounces off and that was enough to be felt by the driver. If your wheels are aftermarket and non hub centric, one or more may not be perfectly centered when the five lug bolts were torqued down. You may even have one or more warped or damaged hubs if somebody at some point did not torque the wheels down in a star pattern. The tires could certainly have flatspots or they may even be old and dry. If you have spacers on any of your wheels, try taking them off because they can often cause or exaggerate what you're feeling (my currently does the same and I believe it's from the spacers). |

Try to see if you have any local forum member that could let you borrow their wheels to test out. That way, you could eliminate any wheel related issue.
I am also in the bay area and would love to help but unfortunately I just swapped out the tires from my OEM wheels. |

Possibilities
- bent wheel - rotors are old and can get imbalanced - worn control arm bushings Mine ended up being a combination of all three.

I'm discovering that mine is coming rack and pinion. There's a thrust bearing that can cause the steering to feel clunky and I think contributes to vibration. I tighten mine down and it helped a lot but not completely resolved.
