Would you go back to 10w60?
All of the oil changes above are with 10w60 (castrol or BMW) with the exception of the most recent change when I moved to Red Line 5w50. Rod bearings (VAC) were changed in April 2021 before SC went on July 21. As you can see, the iron has crept up and is now higher than the universal average with the latest oil change (Red Line) with aluminum and other metals holding steady. Being newer to oil reports, I'm not sure the change is mechanically or even statistically significant. Would you abandon the Red Line 5w50 over the shift in iron content? |

Granted, I don't live in a colder climate area but have though about going to Redline 5w50 before. I personally stuck with LM 10w60 on my SC car, and have had clean reports. You could go back to 10w60 on the next oil change and get another report to compare to the 5w50 report. That's probably the easiest way to see if the shift in iron will go back to normal levels.

SeverL things:
1. Your iron level is fine! You also have bit longer OCI, don't forget that. 2. Oil did better than LM (IMO mediocre stuff). Reason is that RL almost did not shear down, which is bcs. much better base stock. LM sheared down quickly to W50 grade and actually KV100 is lower taking into consideration OCI. 3. RL has very aggressive ester base stock that is known to "peal" off left over iron. It takes few OCI to stabilize. I personally would keep this oil over LM 10W60 any day. But even if your iron stays where it is, it is actually very good result. 4. Next time do TBN and TAN analysis. |
