Wheel stud install with wheel on?
Greetings all,
I was curious what the consensus was of installing a wheel stud kit without removing the rim. I have seen it done both ways, I want to do it the "correct way" but if it makes no difference I would just leave the rim on and do a single stud at a time. If for any reason that would pose problems please let me know. I don't have a lift and would be doing it myself so any small life hack is appreciated! Also, I "think" I found the answer on this next questions. After the wheel studs are installed, does that pose a problem for rotor replacement? I have to do a brake job this weekend and dont want to give myself extra hassle if I have to remove them to get the rotors off. I do not think they will pose a problem based on what I read, but I wanted to confer with the experts here. For reference, here is the kit from FCP EUro I purchased, as I imagine that could impact the answer to my question. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...12x1578mmbrskt |

1- i would take the wheel off. I dont want to get locktite on my wheel trying to insert it and touching the wheel by accident.
2- the studs thread into the hub not the rotor so its fine |

Pull the wheel off and do it right.
You need to clean out the threads in the hub before installing the studs using brake cleaner and a small brush. You can't do this with the wheel on Also... if you have to do a brake job this weekend why wouldn't you just install them at the same time?

Thanks, that is what I had thought, when I watched the videos it really seemed like the locktite art in particular would not sit correct with me.
The only reason I was going to do it before is because I had a little time and wanted to tinker! I am going to wait until the weekend when I have it on a lift. |

Just make sure to do correct torque. The studs themselves are much lower than the nuts IIRC
From Apex: Torque the stud itself between 22 & 25 ft/lbs (24 ft/lbs / 288 in/lbs / 32 Nm) into the hub. DO NOT OVER TORQUE ! This is only “hand tight” and is normal ! |

You can certainly do it correctly with the wheel on. Just more of a pain. Probably easier just to take off the wheel.

What I did was take the wheels off, install them with red Loctite, torque it down 22 ft/lb.
