installing and setting up ball bearings is very demanding. you not only need to set to a certain preload value but need special tools and a lot of experience with that stuff, otherwise it will not last long.
i would definitely recommend to have it done at a shop that does this regularly and has done it +20 times in the past already. really no diy or nothing i would have done at a shop that is afraid of doing it! but at least they are honest! even the official bmw motorsport gt4 documentation says you need "advanced specialist knowledge" and therefore does not explain it any further. |

and to explain a bit more why it is confusing sometimes when you manage to get some preload or torque values and wonder why they make no sense or why the diff fails within a few hundred miles:
there are different versions of these ball bearings, different crush sleeves, different nuts, different screws available/out there. depending on how you use and mix these, setup is completely different with completely different ways of installation and different values you need to set! |

to keep this thread alive with quality content, here is a comparison of the various hardware setups i offer for e92 m3:
from left to right: - drexler gt race light - drexler gt race - drexler performance - drexler street and a closer look to the first "gt race light" (high end, most expensive): and the low budget alternative. a zf based lsd with modified lockup of 45% . this can be built with an old zf 25% lsd core where i offer perfectly fitting sets of new drexler internals to rebuild to a fresh 45% setup. this will perform very close to the drexler street setup: and a little warning: i just saw in another thread here that a lsd core was built by some unexperienced guys that did not understand the direction of the power and coast ramps. this poor customer got a setup that is the exact opposite of what he bought/expected (plus the parts itself that were used there will not perform as expected either). this is basic knowledge and i would call setting up lsd cores as "diy-stuff". if many shops (i get such ill-working units on a regular basis to get them fixed) even fail to do this correct, the ball bearings setup is a completely different level... and the reason i encourage everybody to have this only done at very experienced shops! |

For now, I am going to use the ZF carrier with my existing ring and pinion so that I do not have to address the pinion bearings. In the future, I may look into another diff with 4.10 gears. At that time, I may just buy a complete diff from a pro such as yourself and save the headache. In the meantime, I will see if it is worth rebuilding my GKN carrier assembly to remove the slop and restore its performance in case I want to use it again. Thanks again! Cheers,

I will continue to do some more research before I attempt to deal with the pinion. The shop that is going to help press on the bearings for my simple carrier swap seems to have a clue, so I will have a good conversation with him and see if he seems confident. Cheers,

driftflo it's always nice to hear the awesome stuff you're putting together!
If there is such a thing a E9X GT4 pumpkin, does that mean you need that pumpkin to use a drexeler GT4 diff? |

nope! you can use the drexler gt4 lsd core in any e92 pumpkin (if built correctly depending on flanges used, see below)!
the gt4 case itself is identical to the normal ones. differences are: - solid sleeve instead of crush sleeve for the pinion (if installed correctly, less stress on the ball bearings... but much more complicated to install properly) - side flanges are screwed instead of just clipped in (so if you want to use gt4 side flanges i need to put the according nuts in the axle bevel gears of the drexler lsd... this means these gt4 flanges can only be used with a drexler lsd with nuts installed... but the drexler lsd can be used with any diff-version, if built without the nut). i'll take some pictures of these parts, then it will be easier to understand... |

unfortunately you do not see these things in that document.
no solid sleeve and no nut. you only see the screw that will be screwed in the nut. you do not see the other parts as these axles do come with preinstalled pinion with the solid sleeve invisible inside (because... see above... very complicated installation process) and you do not see the nut as it is already preinstalled in the oem drexler bmw ms gt4 lsd core. so i.e. it would make no sense to get an oem gt4 lsd core as long as you do not have the according flanges. but i can easily build a gt4 spec lsd, just without these nuts. pretty complicated and confusing indeed... |

as promised here are the pictures of the gt4 goodies:
here you see the round nuts that sit inside the lsd core and the screws that hold the flange in place. in the left the GT4 version with M8 threads. on the right another bmw motorsport version with M10 threads! here you see the nuts pressed on the axle bevel gears all parts together with flanges with holes, screws with washers and the lsd core with nuts installed. here you see the nut in place inside the lsd core and finally, here is the solid sleeve for the pinion on the left and the standard crush sleeve on the right. the solid one is much harder to properly install but if installed correctly will lead to less stress and pressure on the bearings. |

HI Driftflo,
I have read the whole thread from the beginning. Not sure if you are still building diffs for customers but I would be very interested. Some background: Recently purchased a BMW 1M and have been doing some work to get the driving how I like. Installed all required engine mods, also installed a 3.62 final drive, however, I am not happy at all with the diff (1m has same diff as E92 M3). I can feel that it takes quite some time to lock and would need something a little more aggressive. The car is used for fun and also for the occasional speed test and drift day. Need to be able to control the car more with the throttle. Happy to hear your suggestions. In terms of experience, I used to be a professional racer in my younger days (F renault and GT3) and now have a drift car that I drive on weekends and the occasional competition. |

hey shahano,
yeah, i am still building diffs... in the meanwhile it became my main profession (i built ~1.500 diffs to date. ) for the 1M, your application and your experience/skills i would install a slightly longer FD and a drexler gt race light lsd core (i will suggest a detailled setup with according locking rates and preload during the order process). you will not become happy with the OEM lsd type. so i would suggest to upgrade to a clutch type unit... and simply take the best, as BMW does for their factory GT racecars! if you are interested feel free to email me: service@limitedslip.de |

I recently received (to the UK) a customised GT race light diff and DCT 3.62 final drive from Florian and all I can say is WOW, the difference versus stock is huge! The car is so much more fun and grips and grips and grips.
For anyone thinking about it, it's a spectacular upgrade and really changes the handling characteristics of the car for the better the level of wet grip is also impressive and it will drift with ease if asked to, it's very predictable and makes for a very fun car. |

i am busy building m3 diffs ;-)
if you want regular updates just check my instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/limitedslip.de/ some interesting projects are in the making as well: there will be a new high-end lsd core for m3 e92 available soon. it is my very own development (based on the zf/drexler architecture but with a special eye on weight and maximum performance with supersmooth engagement) and now it is close to a first prototype :-) more infos and pictures here once it is ready! i am really looking forward to present it here! furthermore i am developing and installing the first drexler based G8x lsd core soon. the first diff is disassembled and there will be a GT4 like unit that i am currently trying to improve together with drexler concerning installation requirements to make it as easy as possible to get this into a G82. stay tuned... |

Is it possible to convert to taper bearings for the pinion bearings?
