Is it OK to attach a CTEK or battery charger to the jump ports under the hood while changing the battery so I don't lose my settings and have to go through all the re-learning stuff (windows, steering angle, etc.)?

I think you'll only lose your time and date on radio. When I went for the airbag recall they disconnected the battery and I did not notice any settings gone.

OK, because the TIS page on it makes it seem like all the codes will be lost, have to reinitiate a bunch of stuff, etc.:

Ya I'm not sure, I was watching the tech like a hawk and saw he went into the trunk to reconnect the battery after he was done with the airbag, and basically started the car and drove out into the parking.

Recently I changed my battery after 10 years with the original. I used a CTEK charger to keep it topped up. I would have gone longer with the original but only did it because the car was in for a recall and thought of saving myself another trip to the stealer in case!

I have a 2012 BMW M3 E92. 2012 Original battery, BUT purchased a CTEK Charger May 30, 2015. Today 10/23/2018 I decided to replace IT only due to it being 6 years old. Battery seems 100% thanks to CTEK but I feel it might go bad when I’m in the middle of no where so wtf. Will use CTEK Charger right away to maintain another OEM BATTERY starting on replacement date. 6 years in hot hot Florida is pretty good and I’m not interested in setting any records then having to pay big bucks to get rescued. I spend as much as new battery just getting food at Publix! Peace of mind, for late night, long road trips .......I have had batteries only last 4 years in Florida. Besides, I just punched a big hole in my rear tire in front of a Firestone. Tech lifted vehicle with out using lift points ie but lifted right next to lift
points. When I saw it incorrectly lifted, I terminated service. Super nice store manager gave me two PS2 for free for screw up as I was bummed out and felt I could not trust tech to continue. Left there and had a foreign car service center mount tires the correct way. My other choice was take them to court if there was damage? Inspection looked ok, I think most of the sub frame took the weight but still, wtf. Dealers are expensive but they do the work right most times. Just stay with your M3 if you are forced to go any other shops for work. Watch out. Goodyear tires lifted my G37 S on the front steering rods & grease joints! Cracked them! They wanted to do an alignment for the new tires on the M3 but I declined it, advised them I’d pay dealer for that service, tech had never done an M3. He Had worked on BMW’s before but not aware of jack points. Just Can’t take chance to save money these days unless you can observe the work being done, just my opinion of course. M3 could have been lifted via floor jack via the diff jack point just as easy I order to change two rear tires. Lol.

Just replaced my battery. I tried using one of these plugged into the OBD port to keep my settings alive while changing out the battery, but it didn't seem to work as it blew the OBD and dash fuse in the process. I replaced the 5A fuse and got it all working again, but ended up having to clear a bunch of fault codes and reset the time and re-initiate the window. Everything else seems fine and memory settings, etc. were retained.

Once OBD was back up, used Carly to register the battery.

You have a 90Ah 900 crank battery, I had the same battery since September 2011 E92 M3 coupe and just replace it November 2018 with another AGM BMW 92Ah 900 crank battery $245.00.

I was looking at a AutoZone Duralast Platinum battery for about $189.00 but since the OEM last 7 years I decided to purchase another BMW battery

Already replaced it 6 weeks ago. The Advance Auto Autocraft Platinum AGM I bought as replacement is a 95Ah 900CCA battery, so should be better than the original. After discount was $150. Too good to pass up.

PACarGuy Did you have to re-code the battery to the car, I was told by BMW that I didn't have to code the OEM battery it's plug and play.

Not sure if I had to, but I did anyway since I already have the Carly app and it didn't cost me anything additional to do so. Carly considers it the same "type" of battery, so perhaps it wasn't necessary.

Hey guys, can someone share some light on about how long a new battery replacement should last? I replaced the OEM battery at 65K miles on APR 2016. That’s 8 years of use since my e92 M3 is a ‘08 production.
I’ve driven 27K miles since then on the new replacement from an Indy, he installed an Interstate battery, registered and clear codes. They only warranty their batteries for one year.
I haven’t got any codes, but since a couple of days ago the comfort access is acting up, the clock resets to 00:00, and the doors unlock randomly while im driving. I experienced those things before the OEM battery went bad, so I assume this Interstate battery is coming close to die?
I just find it very odd it only lasted 32 months??

That sounds premature for battery to fail, do you keep it charged up on a battery tender? Try by having the battery tested I guess, and make sure the alternator is charging fine.

Thanks for to this thread I figured out when my battery was produced, on my 09' E90 it says 49/12 so I assume the 49th week of 2012 (December 3, 2012)

I put the battery on a charger/tender. Initially it read 50%. I left it overnight and it read 100% in the morning. Disconnected the charger, try to start the car and nothing..! Connected the charger again and it read 0%. Obviously the battery went bad. The manufacturer gave me a prorated warranty since it was 32 months from purchased. I've learnt they offered 24 month full replacement warranty. Anyways, once new battery was installed car cranked up quickly and all electronics are working like supposed to. So this new Interstate battery now reads in their label "30 months free replacement". That explains why my only lasted 32 months!!! Ha!

I have my original battery in my March 10 build date 2011 e92 M3, it lives on tender charger when not driving, I had the dealership test it a few years back and they said it fine... I say run it till it dies...

I suppose, but when you drive it through the winter like I do, the prospect of getting stranded by a dead battery is not much fun. The peace of mind was definitely worth it to me.

As I understand battery registration necessity is not so much a function of the type of battery, but rather the age.

As batteries of all types age, their charging profile (voltage vs. current and temperature) changes as well. The purpose of telling the DME that you have installed a new battery is so the charging profile for a new battery is used (as a charging profile for an older battery will shorten the life of your newly installed battery), and not for the existing old battery.
