Upgraded Rod Bearings?
Another rod bearing thread..yes yes, I know, but I don't just have a generic question on them. I was speaking with my technician at my dealership about having him change them. I told him about the BimmerWorld kit. How it has upper and lower sections to change out with the old ones. And that's where he stopped me.
So he informed me that the rod bearings on our cars are split up into 3 different groups and are color coded (either Y, G, or V). There's no way of knowing what the sizes are until you actually see them. His problem is that these different color codes mean different clearances (as follows) Y= 59.984mm G= 59.977mm V= 59.971mm Reason being is because when the rod bearings are put on they are broken together, so an upper bearing for the first cylinder might be a different size than the upper bearing on the 5th cylinder. And equally, the lower bearing might be different than the upper bearing while also being different than the lower bearing on the 4th cylinder. We all know our cars are very particular and the Germans engineer everything to a fraction of an inch. It's a science. So now he has me curious. Do companies like BimmerWorld take this into account since it seems as though they create generic rod bearings without these size differentiations. On the other-hand, I told him that many other people run these upgraded rod bearings and I haven't heard any issues. Any input would be great. Planning to go supercharged, so if possible I would like to get these done.

You have mixed up rod bearings and main bearings. The main bearings come in multiple sizes while there are only one size of rod bearing from BMW.

Haha well he's a good guy, just messed me up with upgrading my rod bearings. I guess it's because he's never had to do them before? :
