Blackstone Report - '08 - 77k miles
Well my oil report came in. I understand oil analysis is about trending from multiple reports, but with that said, it's hard to ignore the high lead content at almost 7X the industry average.
The engine exhibits no noises, however during the oil change, I did find small specs of metal in the oil filter and in the pan. I will probably run another oil change in 2000 miles and see how things look. It does appear that bearing replacement is evident. EDIT - To clarify RE: 2000 miles.... 2000 miles was the mileage that could be completely accounted for before I did an oil change. Mileage before I purchased the vehicle and when the last oil change was completed is unknown to me. I drove it home from the dealership 1250 miles, the dealer told me they put 400 miles on it while it was at their place, and then I put an additional 350 miles or so before I did the oil change. Any other thoughts? If that was my report I would do just about what you say. Check it in 2k.
I would be nervous driving it until I got the all clear. Which could happen. |

The oil could have 15,000 miles on it for all I know? Again, no noises whatsoever from the engine. I'm crossing my fingers that I'm not doing damage to it before I reach the next 2000 mile mark. Doug |

The high lead can be due to hard driving as said by Black Stone. The 400 miles at the dealership could have been very hard miles.
It may not need bearings. Oil analysis is about the trends. If lead stays high, and copper is soon to follow, then change the bearings. IF they sold you a car with bad bearings, press them to replace them before the engine goes and you make them replace that. Last edited by 4corners; 09-19-2014 at 02:50 PM.. |

Ya, mileage is an unknown variable which makes it difficult to truly read. However 7x the average is pretty high even if it was 15k miles.

Moly is extremely high in the sample as well, and it makes me wonder if there was some additive used in addition to the oil itself.

Since the car was not in the OP's control the whole time that was covered by that oil service interval, it is hard to trust the results entirely. Especially while octane boosters containing tetraethyl lead are still being sold. Tough call though...

If it were me I would have the bearings inspected without a doubt... If you have a warranty that will cover a failure, you have more piece of mind.. But without that, it's a gamble I certainly wouldn't take.

To have metal shavings in the filter and oil pan is incredibly bad news. I wouldn't even bother waiting. I would even suggest taking it back to the dealer.

Also, no noises or rod knock doesn't mean all is good. All local engines that have let go here, all happened immediately and unexpectedly and damage the blocks, rods and crank. It's a real gamble
