PSA: Poor Stilo
This time last year I got my comp license with NASA and decided to spoil my head. I bought a Stilo ST4 and had them build in the noise cancelling earmuffs with speakers & mic for a mere $1100. I was out for a lapping day heat cycling some Hoosiers and set my helmet & HANS on the roof. Jacked one side of the car up to swap the wheels.... where it slow-mo slid off the roof and took a digger on the pavement. Rashed and cracked the paint.
While I was horrified it'd fallen off, I didn't think too much about it until the owner of the shop I work with said it needed to be sent in to HMS for recertification. He was at PRI a couple of weeks ago and talked to the guys at the Stilo booth and they told him there was no way it could be recertified - needs to be replaced. What should have been a helmet that lasted me 5+ years, lasted a season. I'll absolutely get another Stilo as it fit like heaven. I'd love to spring for the CF version this time around, but would probably be murdered by my husband when it showed up in the mail. Moral of the story: don't put your helmet on the roof. Side question: is it worth selling on CL for someone who won't race? Or is that a huge liability issue?

Sucks man. I know what you feel. I got a smoked CF Arai Corsair V helmet to match my S1000RR and lost it just 2 weeks later. I was so angry that i banned myself from joy of riding for 2 weeks lol.
Also another thing i know from experience: Secure your helmet when you are not using it, specially if it's located in the backseat. I once was hit by my helmet in safariing when the driver decided to do a big jump without notifying me. The next thing i know is something heavy from hit my head in the back at a huge pace that i became unconscious for a very brief moment. It was a scary and funny situation at the same time because helmets are meant to protect your head not hit it. As for selling it, for sure man. Just make sure the buyer is fully aware of the damage. |

Besides the cosmetic issue...I'd call HMS Motorsports and see what they say. Just because it hit the ground isn't a 100% death penalty for the helmet. Although its not something you want to do on a regular basis.
I'd see about getting it checked. If you do call...I'd like to hear what HMS said.

Ok, thanks. Sucks...it happens.
I keep my helmet in my track car and its in the included Bell Helmet bag. It sits on my pass seat buckled in so it doesn't roll. I'd like to find a better solution. I've been thinking about getting a helmet bag...the zippered, padded type with the flat bottom.

Yep, I have a gear bag. Was trying to get the Hoosiers off right away. Next time it'll go in the drivers seat if I need to stow it right away.

I had a nice Tupperware container which fit everything in nice and neat. Sounds like a great idea until something leaks. So now I have one box for dirty stuff, one for clean stuff. My helmet and HANS won't fit in the clean box. Can't get a bigger one because my car is already full with tools, tires, jacks, stands, among other things.

i put my helmet on top of my shifter when i take it off. its extended so probably wont work with normal shifter. i seperate my hans each time from my helmet and set that on the drivers seat as i exit.

I don't think I would sell it. Who would want it if it was a liability and what would they do with a helmet they bought cheap? Could be they would sell it again without the warnings you offered and make a little money.

I'd buy it cheap for a Halloween costume.

QFT. Many years ago I destroyed a very nice pair of Maui Jim Flexon sunglasses putting them on the roof of my car. Also lost a $400 Audi Advance Key by leaving it on the roof and then driving away -- got stranded later that day when I turned off the car and couldn't find it, and waited 90 minutes for my dad to bring me the spare.

Update
Gents : Just wanted to give a shout out to HMS Motorsports. I contacted them to see if they'd be willing to re-use my earmuffs/mic, padding and HANS quick release posts to cut me a price break in building a new helmet and they agreed. Still not a cheap replacement, but I'd like to think my head is worth it. Also ordered the Longacre rollbar helmet hook as a preventative measure.
As for the man of the house - he was just horked to learn a little tumble off an E36 can render it a paperweight. So I bought him a Phantom to fly at the track and he's forgotten all about it. squirrel!

Will HMS even send it back? When I rode motorcycles I heard that Arai will inspect helmets after a drop/fall, but if it's bad they destroy it.
As for resale, I'd be hesitant to take the risk. If you do opt to sell it get a paper trail of you telling the buyer and consider cutting out the chin straps (that's how they render expired motorcycle helmets useless/retired). |
