N54 vs 2JZ-GTE
Which engine do you like more and why?
Me personally, mkiv supra is still one of my dream cars. The engine can handle what seems like an unlimited amount of power and is probably one of the most over engineered pieces of work ever. I plan on getting a mkiv supra as a project car sometime in the future... I dont even think the N54 comes close if just look at the engine alone. |

I dont think anyone's going to disagree with you. The only advantage I would say of the N54 is its quick response. It's still completely unproven and not designed to be the workhorse that the 2JZ was. Add to the fact we're talking about a toyota engine here, it's not really a contest as far as which engine is the better choice.
But I like the N54 more... because it does more for me than the 2jz does... seeing that I have an N54 and not a 2jz

Hard to compare the 2jz and the n54.
The n54 just came out. If your talking about right now (11/16/07) which is a better engine. I would say the 2jz. But only time will tell what the n54 is capable of.

2JZ. Bulletproof cast iron block. It could handle 600hp no problem. What can the N54 handle?

One is aluminum and another is cast iron. n54 is modern, light and a better match for its turbo size. I have both engines and 2JZgte is just more fun with all the blunt power it produces and safety.

I actually don't think the 2JZ is all that to be honest... You never see them on a road course, you only see them on the drag... and even then they don't put up good numbers because the powerband is all top end; that is just kind of boring for me. At the end of the day I think the N54 is a better ALL AROUND engine (road course, daily driving, drag) and will be recognized as such in the upcoming years.
With that being said I think the S85 is the best engine ever made... If that was paired in an e90 M3? zomg...

You mean the stock turbo setup which has made 270-280 RWHP on a stock car since the early-90s? Or the stock turbo setup which can safely and consistently make over 500 RWHP on an engine with the same displacement and cylinder configuration as an N54? Or maybe it's the stock engine/turbo setup which doesn't fall on its face after 5000 RPM?

2JZ is a great motor, probably one of the best in the 3.0L range. N54 has definitely proven its worth, but for Toyota to make such a reliable sequential twin turbo setup, attached to a strong bottom end, and sell to the consumer 20 years ago impresses me the most. N54 might never reach the status the 2JZ has gained over the years, but with the single turbo N54s being built, we shall see!

Absolutely a better comparison.
However the 2JZ is still the better engine. More durable and can withstand more than the RB, and you also don't have to deal with MAFs. The advantage the RB has however is response and it's a little lighter. In Japan, parts are plentiful for the RB, but here you're looking at more than 1.5x the cost of fully building a proper RB26 as opposed to a 2JZ. Thank God this isn't a 2JZ-GTE vs. LS7 convo...yet. |

I have never seen a supra on a circuit... They are all dyno queens and straight line. Just not my cup of tea... maybe if someone puts a 2JZ in an e90 I might change my mind hahaha. And I would have an S85 over a 2JZ any day of the week... That V10 and 2k redline though...
