drivetrain clunking noise [video]
Hey all,
Just seeing if I can get any input and hopefully a resolution to this noise I've been experiencing. I believe it could be the drive shaft since it seems to happen when going from a stop to accel or accel to decel. Please watch the video and let me know what you think. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Take a good look at your diff
I think one of your diff bolts might be broken due to a bad worn out bushing. I am pretty sure if you take a good look at your diff it might be sitting a little slanted to one side. The diff bolt on my M3 broke 5 times . Everything you say your car is doing mine did the samething. I am pretty sure this is going to happen to everyone with a E9X M3 down the road as the diff bushing get worn. Take a look at this thread
You will see pics when and everything I had to do to fix my problem. http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...=843389&page=4

Good call on checking your diff
My M3 is a 2008 and I don't track my car. I am just glad all the times my stupid diff bolt broke it did not do any real damage to the car but some people are not so lucky. All I recommend to everyone with a E9X M3 that is getting up there in age to keep a eye on your diff bushing because its going to happen because it caught me off guard. Once you hear the clunk and thump when you accelerate and decelerate just go on ahead take a good look at your diff bolts. Oh one more thing depending on how the diff bolt breaks, it can also damage and break your exhaust mount bracket this has happen to me as well because you will hear the rattle along with the clunk & thunk from the diff.

Not sure. Maybe started 6 months ago. Just thought it was "normal" wearing of the drivetrain.

I have the exact same noise. Couldn't tell if it was coming from trans or diff, but it drives me nuts. Mine doesn't do it all the time though. Going to throw it on the lift tomorrow and check out the diff. For a minute there I thought it was normal till I test drove another m at the dealer and it did not do it. Then I got scared. By the way mine is an 08 with 30k on the clock.
Edit: Just had car on lift and it is definitely not my differential bolts. They are intact and tight as can be. Did not have time to pull exhaust and heat shields to investigate further. Maybe next week. Last edited by eroc0808; 08-03-2013 at 04:08 PM.. |

I would say the axles/VCs could be to blame but it's usually a more dull thud rather than a metal-on-metal clank when a CV fails. Something to check though.

Well my buddy told me that he had four techs under the car and they all agreed this was the sound. I'm hoping they're right....

Brought the car to the dealer today for routine service. I demonstrated the noise for a mechanic. They have diagnosed it as a problem with the driveshaft. They quoted a price around $1600 to replace the entire driveshaft.
