I did a lead/follow exercise with an E36 the first blue session of day 2. Helped me figure out some things I was doing wrong. Not the fastest way around the track (had to lift on the back straight to stay behind, although a few times I was getting eaten alive in the turns), but something to watch:
Cool video, I especially like your overlay which inspired me to update my fast lap with an overlay but not nearly as nice as yours. The reason I asked if you had an instructor was because an instructor came to the garage and shook my hand saying his student was driving a blue e92 M3 and told me nice driving. I thought he was a VIR employee coming to yell at us for using one of the empty garages because I think he had a white polo shirt with a VIR logo on the sleeve. Maybe he was your instructor?

Did he drive over in a pickup truck or golf cart? My instructor's name was John O'Donnell. I don't recall what he was wearing ... could possibly have been a VIR shirt.

Matt you forced the guy in the garage next to us to wear ear protection the whole time he was in the garage.

Do you still have your 991 that you had out at VIR in Feb? I remember you hauling ass in that thing too.

Yes sir!! Fun car! That was fun running that bone stock 991 against prepped GT3's and catching them!

I have deposit on 991 GT3.. Still starting to work on my E46!

The 36 has a muffler on it to!

I think that guy next to us had ear protection so he didn't have to speak to his wife.

I just put one and one together because I think you had the only blue e92 in our group. All I could think of when he approached me was, oh shit, they're going to make me pay for the garage. Then when he pointed at my car and asked who's car that was, I was thinking I was going to get a talking to for spinning out at Oaktree and Hogpen. Glad it was neither of those and he just wanted to say hi.

What kind of tires were you running? It has that yellow lettering on the side, looked pretty serious.

Yep, Conti Grand Am scrubs from Bimmerworld, 275/35-18 all around. They look mean, but they're really not much better than my RE-11 street tires (since they're endurance tires, the compound is a lot harder than typical r-comps). I use them to save money (~$75/ea. and they last forever / can be rotated / etc.) and to get the neutral balance of a square set up (if that's your thing ... feels great like that to me).

There were several blue e92s out there, but I don't know what groups everyone was in. I thought there was at least one other blue one that had a number decal on the doors. I've actually never seen that many blue e92s at once

Hi all - thought I'd post up a couple of Tom Long's laps in my car. He said there was probably a couple of seconds more to had with the car but he's still 5 sec faster than me.... Looking at the data biggest difference in our driving is he's on the power earlier and longer than me (bigger balls)! You can see it in the throttle position bar how much he's at full power. Sorry about the crappy quality but my video editing software sucks.

Here's my best lap. I'm much slower than Tom in turns 2-3 and the esses. But in looking at the data I'm slower pretty much everywhere but hey I'm improving! Should have been a 2:12 but I screwed up 16 and 17.

So glad I found this thread! Amazing video and pics! Anyone else doing the Chin event in July 2nd & 3rd?
Also, sorry, newb here, is the tape on headlights to prevent chips/scratches? Critical?

I personally do not think that it is necessary. VIR is basically a clean track and the danger of something hitting and marking your car is no greater there than on the street. You will get rubber marks etc, but they come off with relative ease.

Come on up and have a good time. I will be at Tarheel three day event prior to Chin and will not be able to stay over.

I'm not a fan of the blue painter's tape. I use a product called Trakk tape from http://www.trakktape.com/ and it works very well. Its thick enough to protect the car and it is clear and barely shows on camera which can be easily photoshopped out if necessary.

Taped the hood and front bumper. The headlights seem to be pretty scratch resistant.
