Just updated my software from E89X-09-12-512 to E89X-12-03-502. I'd be lying if I said I felt a difference but the telephone interface is better.

No harm done Mike. I think Tom was just trying to make the point that module failures are few and far between and that people shouldn't be overly concerned about it. Your posted seemed to suggest the opposite. Anyway, no big deal.
I appreciate your input in here and hope you keep posting. There's a huge lack of knowledge in this area in this community. The more discussion we have between knowledgeable individuals, the better IMO. Quote:

My car is going in tomorrow and I'm going to ask about the update.
Does anyone know if having a Delete-R will affect how software updates are handled? Should I pull it out before taking it in?

I'd pull it out - do you immediately get a CEL without it? What dealer?

Can the update be done with a CIC nav retrofit installed on a 2008 M3?

Not through the dealer, no. It will need to be with someone using autologic or BMW developer software that's leaked across the internet.

M3PO: Thank you for your comments. I appreciate that you are genuinely interested in the information and am happy to help. I did check the knock sensitivity a few other things in the file, most seems to be the same. They probably made some changes to the actual operating system portion of the programming which controls ion sensitivity handling, or something to that effect. There are always things they are changing in the code as they get reports from the field on issues customers experience. That's not to say that someone on 180E software wouldn't have error free operation. The ECU has to adjust to many different environmental factors. Last edited by BPMSport; 05-04-2012 at 03:49 PM.. |

What's the realistic mileage for spark plug change? Mine is a Sept '07 built car with 31k km. Do I need spake plug change?

If you are uncomfortable with an independent repair facility performing the update, I would suggest having the dealer update for you.

UPDATE: Tom uploaded the tuned version of 231E to my car. We re-baselined it before and dynoed it after.
I don't have the sheets (maybe Tom can post them) but it made 363.5 HP for the 231E new baseline. This is after the car had two weeks to adapt/retard the timing and it was 20 degrees hotter outside as well. What that tells me is that this update is still making power. While this baseline is 8.5 HP lower than the stock 231E baseline, that could easily be attributed to many things, the biggest of which is likely temperature. Adaptations and dyno variations being two others. Regardless, this baseline was 13.5 HP higher than my original 100E baseline despite the significant temperature difference. I wouldn't be surprised if it made comparable power to the previous 231E baseline had the temperature been 20 degrees lower. The was flash loaded, adaptations retained, and the car only managed 371 WHP after about 9 runs. This I found to be a bit disappointing. We logged a few runs and it was evident that the car was not able to fully adapt and reach the timing targets. It was 4-5 degrees retarded in some places. Sal suggested that I drive the car hard and see if the car adds timing and feels better. I have been doing that and have not relogged it so I can't say for sure but it does seem to feel better on the street. I should mention that my plugs were replaced by the dealer at 28K IIRC and I have 49.5K miles now. It sounds like it may need to be done again.

231E will not solve the issues, it 35% bandaids it. So much for marketing hype. |
