Interesting twist to second gear vibration story
I drive a E90 M3 6MT and besides from the 'common' 1st to 2nd gear notchiness, my car has another small quirk. Every time I floor it in second gear, my gear knob starts to vibrate right at 7,000rpm to the point where you can feel it and audibly hear it (even my passengers notice). Has anybody else experienced this problem?
I saw this thread and was hoping to get an answer for both of us. Thanks Edit 9/23/11 I just dropped my car off at my local BMW dealership they told me that BMW NA recommends never changing the transmission oil. Ever. They looked at the records of my CPO car and saw that it was not changed at the 1,200 mile service and today it is in for service at 28,500 and the only oils they are changing are engine and differential. Is this normal? Last edited by Mahzari; 09-23-2011 at 07:38 PM.. |

Bought my car used with 26,500 miles two months ago and it has about 28,500 now. I made an appointment to take my car in for the regular service tomorrow so I'm going to mention it. Will keep you guys updated
Thanks for the replies |

That's the goal! I printed out a forum member's screenshot that shows his BMW dealership replaced his entire transmission because of said problem. This will be my second time going to the dealership in a month, my service adviser must love me

I also went on a test drive with one of the employees and he agreed with every point I had about the transmission, the notchy 1-2 shift, the clunking noise it makes at low rpms and the vibration above 6,500rpm. I get my car back on Monday and will keep you guys updated. |

When I received my car back from service, they said my exhaust gaskets were leaking so they replaced both of them and they also gave me a new gear knob because they said that was the source of the vibration. I was pleased. Then, I was driving around yesterday and found that my car makes the exact same noise it did before except now the rattle is in 5th gear at 2,000rpm. It does not happen in any other gear or at any other speed. So, I'm planning on taking it in again...
Any advice? This would be the third time I've taken my car in for the gearbox-related issue since I purchased it in July 2011 |
