2011 Black M3 value?
Have a black M3 with 27k miles, garaged in San Francisco. Car has been babied and treated better than my girlfriend. Since I'm in San Francisco, I want a smaller car, so I'm wondering what the value is for other M3 fans. Dealers keep low-balling me (offering me less than I owe on it -- which s $50k). What's the car worth for other M3 fellas who really want a nice, low-mileage, M3? Thanks! brandon |

You left out a lot of really important information such as options and equipment. You didn't mention the body-style either.
I could see dealers offering you < 50k if your car is a base spec e90 M3. It really all depends on options and condition. I have to add: just because you're being offered less than you owe doesn't necessarily mean that your car is worth what you owe. If I were to trade in my 335i, I wouldn't get what I owe. If I sold it to the right person, I could break even but I wouldn't really make more than I owe.

Fully loaded 2011 M3 E92's with that mileage, that are actually selling, are moving at below $49k (this is just me watching several for sale sites over the last 4 months, so take it FWIW).
I'm guessing the dealer is offering you well below $50k, probably low $4x,xxx's) |

Yeah, sorry, I know I was not giving a lot of info. It's a coupe, with the carbon fiber top and is loaded with the performance package and cold weather package, but it is stock. Yeah, dealers are offering 42K maybe. I was hoping to get 47-49K for it on the open market.

Hahahaha. True, $1 is a good offer! . Yeah, unfortunately, it's a divorce that's requiring this sale. Yeah, I'll get it ready to sell I guess. I'm thinking I'll end up with a 4-cyl Mini...

Just some more added insight to dealer trades.
I have a 2013 335is coupe with less than 8K miles with on it with many nice options and no history. Looking to get a new 2013 M3 coupe or vert. Somewhat of a shock to me to be offered $40K for a trade to an M3. And that was even before we talked price on the M3. What made it a bit more crazy was that they had nearly the same car as mine on their lot with 22K miles for sale at $55K . |

Having sold cars back when I was in college, I can tell you that dealers make quite a bit more money on used cars then they ever do on selling a new one. I have bought most of my personal cars private party and sold all of mine the same way.
Based on the history and assuming excellent condition, When I buy or sell I look at the highest the dealer will provide on a trade say $40,000 and then see what they are listed retail for say $50,000. and then try to buy or sell in the middle. The private owners that try to sell their car for $1,000 under what the dealer is listing for are nuts in my opinion. Believing that the car needs nothing and is turnkey, buying the same car from the dealer offers some big advantages that buying privately cannot match and that is worth more $$ even if the dealer is unwilling to negotiate on the sale to the move the car off their lot and it goes beyond the free car wash nonsense. Even without a warranty you have a lot more recourse if something goes wrong in the first few thousand miles if you buy a BMW from a BMW dealer, if you are replacing a car they will take the trade so less work in trying to sell your current car plus depending on the state/county you get get residual tax on your trade. In addition, if you are seeking financing the dealer should almost always be able to beat the rate and terms you can get financing when you go directly to your own bank. By the way, the idea that telling the dealer that you are paying cash will entice them to a better deal is a misnomer, as long as your are credit worthy they want you to finance as they make money on the financing when you arrange it through them. As this is the case, the negotiation does not stop after the trade and purchase price are negotiated when buying from the dealer. The BMW that my wife currently drives I bought from a fellow forum member about 2 years ago. I purchased it for about $4,500 less than a dealer had the same car listed for and when $ exchanged hands he told me what the dealer offered him for on a trade for his new BMW he ordered. I gave him $3,000 more that they offered him on a trade and was happy to do it because in the end I got a clean car that was exactly what the wife wanted and saved $4500 from buying at the dealer. That being said, the car was just out of warranty, I took off work, bought a 1 way ticket to Texas, and drove the car back. So would I have done that to save $1,500, er No. Right now I am looking for a 2010 to 2011 Alpine White on Black 6 Speed E90 M3 to replace my E39. For the right car I will fly to Virginia, LA, where ever, but I am not going to even send an inquiry to forum members that have their cars listed for $1,000 under what the dealers are listing for. Unless you have something that is super rare or just stupid low miles you have to take a practical stance on selling. |
