This is an excellent question! I think it's a combination of the rapid loss and gaining of traction combined with loading and unloading of suspension components that creates an oscilating wave pattern that results in wheel hop. I am not an engineer, and if anyone knows better please jump in!
As for how to eliminate it, smoother throttle application will definitely help. |

Just give it more gas like a man and it'll smooth out past 5000-6000rpm.

It's the soft bushings BMW uses to create a less harsh ride to please all the posers they market to these days. Change the engine, trans, rear crossmember and diff mounts to make it go away.

the tires are too wet. As we all know, oil and water don't mix. To keep the tires from getting wet, simply oil them down thoroughly before driving in the rain. The oil will repel the water and you will eliminate wheel hop.

My m3 is a pretty bad wheel hopper also if you stand on it in first. Almost as bad as an old fox body mustang.

So many retarded responses even though in reality the wheel hop is frankly embarrassing in a car that costs this much.

Well the folks at BMW aren't expecting us to be doing smokeshows in our m3s. The only time I really get it is in the rain, but that's on purpose when I'm feeding in too much throttle just like when I pitch it sideways when it could be avoided.

Do you drive a 6MT or DSC?
I've never ripped the clutch in 1st gear on my E92 (for no good reason), but I've never experienced wheel hop in my old E36. With traction control off, I could spin the tires SOOO easily in any temp, weather condition, or weather without any wheel hop whatsoever. What's up with the wheel hop? Does everyone get it? I am going to rip it in first tomorrow and see whats up... I'm skeptical of launch technique for those who get all this wheel hop. |

i haven't experienced any wheel hop but i did just install continental DW in 275 and the traction they deliver is crazy
also dropping the clutch at 3-4k will cause that, personally if im going to floor it in first i drop the clutch easy bring it to 2k and punch it, smooth as silk |

Anyhow... turn off DSC, rev to 4 to 5k RPM, drop the clutch, you'll get wheel/axle hop each & every time. Quote:

Ok guys. The original question I asked was yes....for real. I dont have a clue what causes it but it certainly sounds and feels bad on transmission etc..
I like to do small controlled fish tails in the rain, done em for a million years, I never had wheel hop in my E46 and I still own it and have no wheel hop. I really feel that wheel hop could cause damage and I've been very conservative on RPM's when breaking the rears loose to avoid damaging something. RPM's are probably between 3-4k. For all I know if I go 5k plus the resonance or wheel rpms might even out and I wouldnt get the hop but who knows. I get wheel hop EVERY time the rears spin...so its not related to pavement conditions or speeds I dont think. So is there really no official answer to what causes it? Tires that needed to be balanced was about my only guess. |

Indepent rear suspension is very succeptible to wheel hop when launching from a standstill. Also, I hate to be the one to say this, but if you're getting wheel hop while doing a controlled slide...you're doing it wrong. |

And regarding the post that if I'm getting wheel hop cause I'm doing it wrong...I'm all ears...is there some other way to do it? I never had the issue in previous cars. And to clarify, its not wheel hop when sideways, its wheel hop anytime the rears spin...straight ahead acceleration with dsc off in the wet....Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang....sounds terrible, feels damaging. Trying to avoid it for now but doesnt seem right. |

I had a similar experience happen to me when I got my stock 19's powder coated. I talked to several people but they were stumped. I even purchased the Dinan rear upper shock mount kit (14mm) because I had installed H&R lowering springs and spacers for my M. However, I spoke to a tire guy and it ended up being that the idiot who powder coated my rims, had over inflated my tires. Needless to say it was a quick and easy fix but you might want to check your tire pressure. Make sure it is at the recommended PSI for your tires. Lemme know if this helps, good luck!

Is there anyone who has a stock car that does NOT get wheel hop? This would help solve the problem of user error vs something with the tires/suspension/wheels/etc.
If you do NOT get wheel hop, what RPM are you launching at?
