polishing machined lip
Hi, I'm trying to polish my machined lip but I'm not having any luck with mag polish and a buffing cone / drill attachment as instructed on several YouTube videos.
Polishing the lip for 20 mind didn't seem to create even a minor change in the lips reflectance. Any one here have any advice on how to get this to a mirror finish? |

What he said. If you want a polished finish on your machine flips, you're gonna need something stronger than white diamonds. We use that shit on 18k gold, which is WAY softer than your rims.
But again, you would be altering the factory finish so ymmv. |

machined lips typically have a clear coat on them as well. yer gonna have to do a multi-step sanding/polishing to get any kind of results.

What wheels are they? The lips seem to be clearcoated. If you want that crazy almost chrome shine, you need to sand the clear coat off and polish the aluminum.
I had mine stripped, sanded, and polished. Then ceramic coated to reduce the upkeep required on the bare, polished aluminum finish. Here's a pic while the ceramic coating was curing.

Yeah, this is exactly what I was looking for - I realized I hadn't mentioned in my original post that I wanted them to have a mirror finish. How much time did that take or how much did it cost? |

I wouldn't do it by hand because of how much work is required. I had them done as part of when they were being fully refinished. I think $100/wheel is the going rate. Maybe some more for disassembly and re-assembly.

My wheel guy seems to be a bit gun shy about taking 2 piece bbs apart. I think this will be my last 2 piece wheel. A royal pain in the ass. |

Aren't you in Cali? There should easily be a wheel refinishing place that can handle 2pc wheels. Sounds like you need a new guy
Yeah there's quite a few pics over these boards. Check my past threads on this forum or my IG @tailor.mad3

Those are clearcoated. You'll need to separate the faces from the barrels, strip the clearcoat and sand the lips... then follow up with several polish passes to make shine. Using the meguirs powerball isn't going to cut it for what you're after.

Yeah, I'm going to have to redo the barrels thinking I might as well take advantage of that and redo the front barrel lengths and get a square setup of 19x9.5 all around. |
